DAILY GK UPDATES: 17th APRIL 2012

1. WORLD BANK today selected its New President Dr. Jim Yong Kim, a Korean-American global health expert and president of Dartmouth College.
2. MM Kumar has been appointed as the New Chief Justice of J&K High Court.
3. In its annual monetary policy statement for 2012-13, the RBI, after a gap of 3 years, has cut interest rate by 0.50 per cent making the credit cheaper.
4. New Key Rates As Per The  RBI’S Monetary Policy(2012-13):-
Bank Rate- from 9.5% to 9 %(reduced by 0.50 basis point)
Repo Rate- from 8.5% to 8 %(reduced by 0.50 basis point)
Reverse Repo- from 7.5% to 7 %(reduced by 0.50 basis point)
MSF (Marginal Standing Facility Rate)- from 9.5% to 9%(reduced by 0.50 basis point)
CRR (Cash Reserve Ratio) – 4.75 %( no change)
SLR (Statutory Liquidity Ratio)- 24 %(no change)
5. India is all set to test fire its 5,000 km range Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Agni-5 tomorrow from a test range off the coast of Odisha.
6. Bangladesh's cricket team coach Stuart Law resigned from his post citing family reasons.
7. International Cricket Council (ICC) executive board led by ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat has decided to expand the number of teams in the 2014 Twenty20 World Cup in Bangladesh from 12 to 16.
NOTE: - Twenty20 World Cup will be played this year in Sri Lanka from Sept 18 to Oct 7 between 12 teams.
8. Platinum Jubilee of the Assam Legislative Assembly will be organized on20th April.
9. India and the UAE today signed an agreement in India-UAE Joint Commission meeting at Abu Dhabi today to amend the double taxation avoidance treaty, paving the way for greater sharing of tax related information between the two countries and also agreed to set up a joint committee to look after consular issues.
10. The meeting of National Ganga River Basin Authority (NRGBA) held in New Delhi today under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
11. A 12-member multi-party Parliamentary delegation led by the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj today left for Srilanka for on-ground assessment of the resettlement of war affected Tamil civilians and political process in the war-torn areas. 
12. United Nations Organisation has selected Madhya Pradesh’s Bhagirathi Krishak Abhiyan as one of the three best innovative methods in the world for water conservation. The campaign was launched in Dewas district of the state in the year 2006.
NOTE: - United Nations Organisation gives away UN-Water Best Practices Award for encouraging best performances in water sector conservation. This year’s subject of the award was “Water for food security".
13. Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court Syed Rafat Alam administered the oath to Eleven new judges as Additional judges today. Number of judges in the high court has reached to 85.
14. Minister for Communications and Information Technology Kapil Sibal today inaugurated the World IT Forum meeting in New Delhi and announced the completion of Government's scheme of National Optical Fiber Network (NOFN) for providing Broadband connectivity to each Gram Panchayat in the country  in another two and half years.
15. ICC has announced to end Champions Trophy after 2013.  The 2013 Champions Trophy in England will be the last series of the 14-year-old tournament, with the ICC moving towards having one championship for each of the game’s three formats from 2015.
