1. New Year celebrations to mark 2013 begin:
Celebrations are being held around the world to mark the New Year. Big shows are also planned in many other cities globally.
2. Direct cash transfer scheme set to roll out from tomorrow:
Scheme rolls out in 20 districts from tomorrow
Note: The Direct Benefit Transfer system will be implemented in seven schemes such as scholarships and old age pensions from Jan 1. A total of 26 schemes will be covered under it. Chidambaram said "The scheme will be rolled out in 11 more districts on Feb 1 and 12 more districts will join on March 1," and  the scheme would be implemented in all the districts of the country by the end of 2013. He added that ‘the government has no intention to provide cash subsidy for food, fertiliser and petroleum products’.
3. Delhi Government launches 181 helpline for Delhi women:
Note: The helpline was announced in the wake of the recent gang rape incident in the national capital. The helpline number 181 for women in distress in Delhi Chief Minister’s office, has become operational. The toll free number, which can be dialed from landline and mobile phones, will be connected with all the police stations across the city.
4. Patrick Suckling appointed as Australia's Next High Commissioner to India:

Note: Career diplomat Patrick Suckling on 30 December 2012 had been appointed as Australia’s next High Commissioner to India. The appointment of Patrick Suckling was announced by Foreign Minister Bob Carr who asserted that the role was important because India is Australia’s fourth largest export market, with trade between the two countries reaching 18-billion dollars a year. Suckling holds a Post-Graduate Diploma in Hindi from the University of Sydney and as a career diplomat had an expertise in policy development, public diplomacy and consular service.
5. Nagaland gets new Chief Secretary & DGP:
Note: Nagaland gets new Chief Secretary and Director General of Police on the New Year day as the incumbents retire today. Additional Chief Secretary Alemtemshi Jamir, a Nagaland Cadre IAS of 1977 batch, is the new Chief Secretary while B Kezo, Director General of Civil Defence, replaces incumbent O Alem as DGP of Nagaland.
6. McGrath in ICC Cricket Hall of Fame:
McGrath became the third inductee of the year 2012-13 to the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame:
Note: Australian pace legend Glenn McGrath is going to be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame during the third Test between Australia and Sri Lanka starting from 4 January2013 in Sydney. He will join Enid Bakewell and Brian Lara to the list and also became the 68th male member of the Hall of Fame.
7. Hillary Clinton admitted to hospital with blood clot:
Note: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been admitted to hospital in New York with a blood clot. Officials say, Mrs. Clinton suffered a concussion earlier this month after fainting and falling down. Doctor said "She is being treated with anti-coagulants and is at New York-Presbyterian Hospital so that they can monitor the medication over the next 48 hours’.
8. India-Korea Davis Cup tie to be held in Delhi:
Note: India have decided to host their February 1 to 3 Davis Cup tie against Korea in the national  capital. "Since it is a home tie, the All India Tennis Association has decided to hold the tie in New Delhi at the R K Khanna Tennis Stadium from February 1 to 3," the AITA said.
9. Indian and Pakistani teams arrive in Kolkata:
Note: India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, coach Duncan Fletcher, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and local lads Ashok Dinda and Mohammad Shami arrived on Monday along with the Pakistani contingent for the second ODI against Pakistan slated for January 3. The remaining team India players will arrive in batches on Tuesday.
