Boost Of The Day: Prepare Your Self For Bigger Things In Life

Dear BA’ians,

We are sure you all have heard about the Pandavas. The victory of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata is generally attributed to the military might of Arjuna and Bheema and  the strategic planning of Sri Krishna. But the one character who ensured that the Pandava princes survived through the period of exile in the forests was Yudhishtira. Come we will tell you a beautiful and very inspiring story about them today.

One day all the four brothers were poisoned on drinking water from a pond, arrogantly defying the warning of the Yaksha (celestial being in charge of the pond). It was the diplomatic Yudhishtira, who skilfully negotiated with the Yaksha and revived them back to life. The following is another incident where Bheema would have been lost but for the interference of the tactful king. One day towards the end of the period of exile, when the Pandavas were camping in the plains of North India, Bheema set out hunting. As he was wandering in the forest, he came across a huge python. As soon as the python lay its eyes on the prey (Bheema), it grabbed him and entangled him in its coils. The man who had single handedly defeated ferocious tigers and huge elephants was now trying to wriggle out of the coils of the snake in vain. Worried by Bheema’s long absence, Yudhishtira sets out in search of him.  Finally He maintained his cool and did not allow his anxiety get the better of him, continuing his search he finally reaches him only to find him entrapped by the serpent. Realising Bheem’s failed conduct in escaping from the serpants clutches, Yudhishtira realised that no ordinary snake could overpower the mighty Bheema, So he begs him to release his brother and offers him any other food that he would like to have.

Hearing his words the snake reveals his true identity. He was in fact the glorious King Nahusha of heavenly realms and had been reduced to this state by the curse of Sage Agastya for his arrogant behaviour. Later, feeling pity for the remorseful king, the sage tells him that he will be released from the curse when Yudhishitira visits him and answers all his questions on ethics. Yudhishtira reverentially bows to the King and accepts this task. Imagine holding a discussion on an abstract theme like ethics when the life of one’s own brother is at stake. He invokes the blessings of Lord Dharma and sets out to answer the questions.

The first question posed by Nahusha is, “Who is a Brahmin?” The King replies,” A Brahmin is one who has the qualities of truthfulness, generosity, sympathy, dislike for cruelty, and a capacity to do tapas.”

Then Nahusha puts forward questions on various topics which Yudhishtira answers with utmost modesty. What was remarkable was not that Yudhishtira answered all these questions, but the manner in which he did so. To be able to communicate clearly without hurting the listener is an art which the King had mastered.

Nahusha was pleased by the gentleness of the erudite King, and his desire not to hurt anyone, not even with his words. Nahusha releases Bheema from his coils and he himself is released from the curse. Hearing his words the snake reveals his true identity. This value of being gentle and courteous is an asset for anyone who aspires for success in his endeavours, whether you are a businessman, a diplomat or a professional. In all situations, Yudhishtira chose to respond than to react blindly. He maintained his cool and did not allow the surging emotions to influence his conduct. He always identified the best course of action for the welfare of all and pursued it.Thanks to the genius of Sage Vyasa for having presented such a brilliant role model of diplomacy for future generations
to emulate.

Dear friends,Choose that action that benefits you as well as others. At least it should not harm others while benefiting you.
