Makar Sankranti in Hindu Calendar refers to a festival dedicated to a Hindu deity Soorya Devta which is celebrated in the month of January every year in our country.  Makar Sankranti signifies the start of the harvest season. The festivities associated with Makar Sankranti are known by various names such as Lohri by north Indian Hindus and Sikhs, Sukarat in central India, Bhogali Bihu by Assamese Hindus, and Pongal by Tamil and other south Indian Hindus.

It falls on 14th January when the sun moves into Capricorn (Makar in Sanskrit), and starts on its Northward journey. It also marks the end of the winter season with the start of spring season. People across the country prepare various delicacies with Til as the main ingredient for this festival. A tradition of flying kites is also observed on this day in various parts of the country. The festival starts with the celebration of Lohari on a night just before the day of Sankranti.
