National Technology Day on 11th May: Technical Advancements That Made The Day Memorable

Today’s date is commemorated to mark the historic victory of test-firing its very first nuclear-capable missile back in 1998. The nuclear tests took place on May 11, 1998 in the presidency of late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam who lead Indian team of scientists to successfully test-fire the Shakti-1 nuclear missile at Rajasthan’s Pokhran test range. The other technical advancements occurring at this red-letter day include India’s first indigenous aircraft – the Hansa 3 – which took flight in the state of Bengaluru designed by National Aerospace Laboratory, India. The light, two-seater aircraft was aimed to serve pilot training, surveillance, aerial photography and other such purposes. This technically blessed day for India made one more achievement fall in its list of modern advancement when DRDO successfully completed the test-fire sessions of India’s Surface-to-Air Trishul missile.

With all these technological advancements being completed on the same day, then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced May 11 as the National technology Day. The first National Science Day was celebrated on 11 May 1999. Since then National Technology Day is celebrated all across India to honor the advancement of Science and Technology in India and to appreciate the efforts of people contributing to make India a leading nation with advanced technology.

The National Technology Day 2018 theme is “Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future.” The propitious aim behind the theme is to promote the development of technology in various fields. On this day, the Technology Development Board will present National Awards to the persons who had noteworthy achievement in the respective fields. People will be awarded for their contribution and research.
