Dear Students,

World Music Day (21 June) : The importance of music in Student life

World Music Day

Music has existed for as long as mankind has found its voice, and quite possibly before. Every culture of the world has it’s own form of music, as distinct and unique to its area as language and cuisine.World Music Day celebrates music in all its forms and the impact it’s had on the world and the human spirit.

Fete de la Musique or World Music Day is being celebrated today, June 21, marking the beginning of summer solstice, i.e., the longest day of the year.

Today, musicians from all genres and all ages, amateurs and experienced performers, gather together to perform at various public places.

The concept of a united day for musicians to mark summer solstice was first proposed by American artiste Joel Cohen back in 1976.But it was France that first incorporated World Music Day(in 1982) as a day of national importance, which was later adopted by many countries.

The idea was taken up by French Music and Dance director Maurice Fleuret for Minister of Culture Jack Lang in 1981.

The first World Music Day or Fete de la Musique took place on June 21, 1982 - the year's summer solstice in the North hemisphere.

Over the years, World Music Day has evolved to explore new musical trends and music from across the world, and revives traditional music.

At every instance, there is a beat, a rhythm, a note that surrounds us – it’s the music of the world. While the effects of music on people are not fully understood, studies have shown that when you hear music to your liking, the brain actually releases a chemical called dopamine that has positive effects on mood.

Most of us, when we are sad listen to our favourite music, this because music acts as a stress buster to us. We feel relaxed and calm when we listen to music. It depends on the type of music which we are listening to.Music can change our mood in just a few seconds. Music can make us feel happy, stress less, tension free, calm, motivated, energetic therefore music is not less than any booster.

Listening to ‘relaxing’ music reduces stress and anxiety in students.Motivating music can energise us and motivate us when we are feeling low. Music therapy is useful for meditation also by playing slow songs in background which will ultimately benefits us.

Daily exercise is an important part of over daily life to stay fit and fresh.Various studies suggest that music can enhance aerobic exercise, boost mental and physical stimulation, and increase overall performance.

Music can make learning more fun and engaging which is a great tool for memorization. Music can help kids keep focus and remember things they learnt for a long time. Far from being a distraction it helps people remember better. Evidence that music helps with memory has led to researchers to study more about the impact of music on people who suffer memory loss.

Music is considered to be one of the best ways to enter a ‘mind- wandering mode’ which was discovered by neurologist Marcus Raichle in 2001. This is the state the brain enters into most easily and music is one of the most effective ways of allowing you to enter this mode. Music fuels the mind and thus it fuels our creativity. A creative mind allows to make great discoveries and innovations.
