Daily Vocabulary for Bank Exams: 12th April 2019

Vocabulary is an important part of English that helps you deal with all kinds of questions in objective as well as descriptive papers of various exams. In the recently concluded Banking Exams, we witnessed that a major part of the exam was based on vocabulary. Many questions were vocab based and we can expect the same in the upcoming exams. 1. RAVENOUS (adjective) अति पेटू
Meaning: (of hunger or need) very great; voracious.
Synonyms: insatiable, greedy, gluttonous, edacious.
Antonyms: content, sated, satiated, satisfied.
Usage: No matter what type of stressful situation I’m facing, my body responds by eating everything in sight because of my ravenous appetite.

2. DENIZEN (noun) निवासी
Meaning: a person, animal, or plant that lives or is found in a particular place.
Synonyms: inhabitant, occupant, resident, tenant.
Antonyms: visitor, emigrant, evacuee, expatriate.
Usage: The author of Atlanta’s latest guidebook is a longtime denizen of the city who knows all the best places to visit.

3. RESORT(verb) प्रयोग करना
Meaning: turn to and adopt (a course of action, especially an extreme or undesirable one) so as to resolve a difficult situation.
Synonyms: expedient, recourse, makeshift, substitute.
Antonyms: abstain, dodge, halt, shun.
Usage: Excluded from parliament by the fatal error of his youth, he was compelled to resort to indirect means of working out his plans by influencing public men.

4. SPLURGE (verb) पैसे उड़ाना
Meaning: to spend extravagantly or ostentatiously.
Synonyms: squander, fling, dissipate, disburse.
Antonyms: accumulate, hoard, conserve, preserve.
Usage: I feel like splurging on a new dress.

5. INCONCEIVABLE: (adjective) अचिंतनीय
Meaning: not capable of being imagined or grasped mentally; unbelievable.
Synonyms: implausible, improbable, incredible, incogitable.
Antonyms: plausible, reasonable, tenable, conceivable.
Usage: When I looked at my outrageous hospital bill, I blinked at the inconceivable amount.

6. REFRACTORY (adjective) दुराग्राही
Meaning: stubborn or unmanageable.
Synonyms: recalcitrant, obstreperous, insubordinate, intractable.
Antonyms: obedient, manageable, amenable, compliant.
Usage: Most teenagers go through a refractory phase where they don’t want to listen to authority figures.

7. DETENTE (noun) नरमी
Meaning:  the easing of hostility or strained relations, especially between countries.
Synonyms: agreement, peace, amity, concord.
Antonyms: disruptive, antagonism, antipathy, hostility.
Usage: The policy of detente was scrapped and the objective was increasingly to roll back the Soviet Union.

8. CONTENTIOUS (adjective) विवादास्पद
Meaning: causing or likely to cause an argument; controversial.
Synonyms: disputable, debatable, moot, vexed.
Antonyms: agreeable, nonbelligerent, pacific, peaceful.
Usage: This last piece of evidence is particularly contentious and likely to feature prominently in the appeal.

9. SACK (verb) बरख़ास्त करना
Meaning: dismiss from employment.
Synonyms: bounce, discharge, dismiss, terminate,
Antonyms: recruit, employ, engage, hire.
Usage: They made him pay for his offence by giving him the sack.

10. DILATORY (adjective) धीमा
Meaning: slow to act
Synonyms: sluggish, slothful, lax, slack.
Antonyms: fast, prompt, brisk, quick.
Usage: They were dilatory in providing the researchers with information.
