Every year 24th April is celebrated as National Panchayati Raj Diwas across India. The Constitutional (73rd Amendment) Act, 1992 which came into force with effect from 24th April, 1993 has institutionalized Panchayati Raj through the village, Intermediate and District level Panchayats. This date marks a defining moment in the history of decentralization of political power to the grassroots level.

First time In the year 2010, The UPA government has started the Panchayati Raj Day celebrations on 24th of AprilSo far, National Panchayati Raj Day was celebrated in Delhi only but this year, as part of the ‘Gram Uday Se Bharat Uday Abhiyan’, which has began on the 125th birth anniversary of Babasaheb Ambedkar on 14th of April, 2016. It was celebrated in all gram panchayats across the country, except those in poll-bound states.

On the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has addressed the Panchayat across the country from JamshedpurHe emphasized that facilities and services in rural areas, should be at par with the cities. The PM also exhorted the Panchayat Representatives to use their tenure to work towards serving the people by aiming to bring about trans formative change in the villages. The Prime Minister encouraged Panchayats to think beyond budgets, and focus on Jan Suvidha. 
This year a new Mandate of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj have released along with the Devolution Index Report by the Prime MinisterThe Panchayat Sashaktikaran Puraskar and Rashtriya Gaurav Gram Sabha Puraskar to Best Performing Panchayats and Gram Sabhas were also awarded on the occasion. These awards were to be given to 183 Panchayats, which includes 21 District Panchayats, 39 Block or Intermediate Panchayats, and 123 Gram Panchayats.

To celebrate the day, Gram Sabhas have also organized the programmes and to hold discussions around 300 central government officers have visited various districts to attend these programmes of under ‘Gram Uday Se Bharat Uday Abhiyan’.

The Panchayati Raj in India generally refers to the system introduced by constitutional amendment in 1992 and the Panchayat Raj system was first adopted by the state of Rajsthan in Nagaur district on 2nd Oct 1959. The second state was Andhra Pradesh, while Maharashtra was the Ninth state. This system was adopted by state governments during the 1950s and 60s.
