He was a comedic British actor who became one of the biggest stars of the 20th century’s silent-film era.His character”The Tramp” relied on pantomime and quirky movements to become an iconic figure of the silent-film era.


Charles Spencer Chaplin (A Comedian who won millions hearts) |_4.1Charlie Chaplin’s rise to fame is a true rags-to-riches story.Charles Spencer Chaplin was born in London,England.His father was a versatile vocalist and actor and his mother,known under the stage name of Lily Harley,was an attractive actress and singer,who gained a reputation for her work in the light opera field.He  was a newsvendor, printer,toymaker,doctor’s boy, etc.,but during these occupational digressions, he never lost sight of his ultimate aim to become an actor.Charlie Chaplin began acting on stage at the age of 12.In 1908 at the age of 19 he teamed up with the prestigious Fred Karno company and went to America.Chaplin got his first taste of the United States,where he caught the eye of film producer Mack Sennett and signed a contract for a $150 a week.

(1916), The Rink (1916),The Vagabond (1916) and Easy Street (1917). He was one of the best known figures in the world, till 1918.

Chaplin was married four times and had a total of 11 children.In 1918 he  married 16-year-old Mildred Harris but the marriage lasted only for two years.He wed again to another actress Lita Grey,in 1924 whom he’d cast in The Gold Rush,they two sons Charles Jr. and Sydney but they got divorced in 1927.In 1936, Chaplin married again, this time to a chorus girl who went by the film name of Paulette Goddard. They lasted until 1942.That was followed by a nasty paternity suit with another actress, Joan Barry, in which tests proved Chaplin was not the father of her daughter, but a jury still ordered him to pay child support. Chaplin married 18-year-old Oona O’Neill in 1943. Unexpectedly the two would go on to have a happy marriage, one that would result in eight children.

He had never applied for US citizenship, but claimed that he was a “paying visitor” to the United States. Many British citizens called Chaplin a coward and a slacker. This and his other career eccentricities sparked suspicion with FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover and the House Un-American Activities Council (HUAC), who believed that he was injecting Communist propaganda into his films. Chaplin’s later film The Great Dictator (1940), which was his first “talkie”, also created a stir. In the film Chaplin plays a humorous caricature of Adolf Hitler. Some thought the film was poorly done and in bad taste. However it grossed over $5 million and earned five Academy Award Nominations

The Mutual Film Corporation created a subsidiary called The Lone Star Corporation solely to make the Chaplin films. Lone Star paid Chaplin $10,000 a week plus a $150,000 signing bonus for the twelve two-reel comedies. During his lifetime Chaplin received three awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.  He was  nominated for Best Actor and Best Director for The Circus (1928) and won an honorary award for writing, directing, producing, and acting.he composed for many of his films. In 1952, Chaplin visited Europe for the premiere of his film ‘Limelight’ and was not allowed to return to the US,he settled in Switzerland. He made a film, ‘The King In New York’, in 1957, which was full of criticism of McCarthy and American society in general.He also authored two autobiographical books, “My Autobiography” in 1964 and its companion volume, “My Life in Pictures” in 1974.He died in Switzerland aged 88 from natural causes in 1977.
