Q1. Out of three numbers, the first is twice the second and is half of the third. If the average of the three numbers is 56, what will be the difference between the highest no. and the lowest one?

Sol.
Let second no. = x
First no. = 2x
Third no. = 4x
∴ x+2x+4x=56×3 
x=24 
Difference = 3x=72 

Q2. The avg. weight of three men A,B and C is 84 kg. Another man D joins the group and the average now becomes 80 kg. If another man E, whose weight is 3 kg more than that of D, replaces A, then the average weight of B,C,D and E becomes 79 kg. What is the weight of A?

Sol. A + B + C = 252 
A + B + C + D = 320 …….(i)
∴ D = 320 – 252 = 68 kg 
and E = 71 kg.
E + B + C +  D = 79 × 4 = 316 …..(ii) 
From (i) & (ii) 
A – E = 4
or A = 71 + 4 = 75 kg.

Q3. The average of nine numbers is M and the average of three of these is P. If the average of remaining numbers is N, which of the following equation holds true?

Q4. The avg. monthly expenditure of a family was Rs. 2400  during the first three months; Rs. 2800 during the next four months and Rs. 3500 during the last 5 months of a year. If the total savings during the year were Rs. 4200, what was the one fifth of annual income?

Total yearly expenditure = (2400 × 3) + (2800 × 4) + (3500 × 5) 
= 7200 + 11200 + 17500 = 35900
= 35900
Total annual income = 35900 + 4200 
= 40100
∴ one-fifth of  income=1/5×40100=8020

Q5. There was one mess for 30 boarders in a certain hostel. If the number of boarders was increased by 10, the expenses of the mess increased by Rs. 40 per month, while the average expenditure per head diminished by Rs. 2. Find the original monthly expenses.

Q6. The avg. age of Sachin and Ganguly is 35 years. If Kaif replaces Sachin, the average age becomes 32 years and if Kaif replaces Ganguly, then the average age becomes 38 years. If the average age of Dhoni and Irfan  be half of the average age of Sachin, Ganguly and Kaif, then what is the average age of all the five people?

Kaif + Ganguly = 64 …….(ii)

Avg (Sachin + Ganguly + Kaif) = 105/3 =35 
Dhoni + Irfan = 35
