Directions (1-5): In each question below is given a statement followed by two assumptions numbered I and II. An assumption is something supposed or taken for granted. You have to consider the statement and the following assumptions and decide which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement. Give answer
(a) If only assumption I is implicit. 
(b) If only assumption II is implicit. 
(c) If either I or II is implicit. 
(d) If neither I nor II is implicit. 
(e) If both I and II are implicit. 
Q1. Statement: “Repeat your recruitment ads on Sunday for just 60 per sq cm.” — An advertisement in a newspaper 
Assumptions: 
I. People want ads at zero cost.
II. There are some people who want to repeat their recruitment ads. 

Q2. Statement: “Quit drinking before it destroys you.” — A notice issued in public interest by XYZ department
Assumptions: 
I. People fear being destroyed. 
II. Drinking breaks the drinker’s family. 
Q3. Statement: “The government’s decision to supply ARV drugs in six selected states free of cost is commendable, but the patients should be adequately educated before the drugs are administered.” — View of Mr ‘X’
Assumptions: 
I. The patients can develop drug resistance if they are not regular in their medication. 
II. The patients if not counseled properly may spread the drug-resistant disease.  
Q4. Statement: “it is alarming to note that only 48 to 50 per cent of the voters voted in State ‘X’. The government must make it mandatory for all to exercise their franchise in order to make the democracy more meaningful.” — View of a voter
Assumptions: 
I. Increase in the participation of voters will ensure increase in the rationality of the democratic set-up.
II. Making it ‘Mandatory for all to exercise their franchise’ may increase the number of voters.
Q5. Statement:  The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has declared 2004 the International Year of Rice, in an effort to highlight the increasing demands for rice among growing populations and production constraints for the commodity. 
Assumptions: 
I. There is an impending crisis of rice is several countries of the world.
II. The Year of Rice may act as a catalyst for country – driven programmed throughout the world.

Directions (6-10): In each question below is given a statement followed by two courses of action numbered I and II. A course of action is a step or administrative decision to be taken for improvement, follow-up or further action in regard to the problem, policy etc on the basis of the information given in the statement. You have to assume everything in the statement to be true. Then decide which of the two given suggested courses of action logically follows for pursuing. Give answer 
(a) If only I follows. 
(b) If only II follows. 
(c) If either I or II follows 
(d) If neither I nor II follows. 
(e) If both I and II follow. 
Q6. Statement: City ‘X’, the capital of the economy, witnessed twin bomb blasts and caused huge damages with a toll of more than 50. 
Courses of action: 
I. The persons arrested in concern with the blasts should be hanged without any trials. 
II. The police of city ‘X’ should be alerted so that possible communal divide and riots may be constrained. 
Q7. Statement: Above 40 people were killed in a stampede which broke out at Kumbh Mela site at Nasik. 
Courses of action: 
I. Effort should be made for better management in any such melas in future. 
II. A ban should be imposed on all such events with large gatherings. 
Q8. Statement: Developed nations are retaining high subsidies on their agriculture products and creating problems for Indian farmers. 
Courses of action: 
I. India should continue with its policy of giving subsidy on agriculture products. 
II. India should form an alliance to build pressure on the developed nations to reduce the subsidy.  
Q9. Statement: Train accidents have become a common occurrence in India. 
Courses of action: 
I. Resignation of the Railways Minister should be demanded. 
II. The manpower of Railways should be trained and sensitized. 
Q10. Statement: India once again bombed off in the Champions Trophy hockey tournament. 
Courses of action: 
I. All the players should be dropped from the team. 
II. India should stop sending its team to play any international tournament.
Directions (11-15): In making decisions about important questions, it is desirable to be able to distinguish between “strong” arguments and “weak” arguments insofar as they relate to the question. “Strong” arguments are those which are both important and directly related to the question. “Weak” arguments are those which are of minor importance and also may not be directly related to the question or may be related to a trivial aspect of the question. 
Each question below is followed by two arguments number I and II. You have to decide which of the arguments is a “strong” argument and which a “weak” argument.
Give answer 
(a) If only argument I is “strong”.
(b) If only argument II is “strong”.
(c) If either I or II is “strong”.
(d) If neither I nor II is “strong”.
(e) If both I and II are “strong”.
Q11. Statement: Should it be made mandatory for all chemists’ shops in India to display boards with names and photos of the respective pharmacist? 
Arguments: 
I. Yes, this will help Drug Control Department in getting wired up to net unscrupulous pharmacists who promote sale of spurious and inferior quality drugs. 
II. No, the move will prevent on pharmacist from illegally working at more than one chemist shop simultaneously – a situation which is exploited by many for selling spurious drugs. 
Q12. Statement: Should there be call centres for farmers?
Arguments:  
I. Yes, the move will facilitate farmers to obtain information related to agriculture in order to increase agriculture produce.
II. No, our poor farmers are unable to bear the burden of the cost charged for the service.   
Q13. Statement: Should war films like LoC Kargil be banned in India?
Arguments:  
I. Yes, these films vitiate the atmosphere of peace of India with the neighbouring country. 
II. No, these films embolden the Army and the citizens of the country.
Q14. Statement: Will dual citizenship be of any significance without any voting right?
Arguments: 
I. Yes, there are so many citizens who don’t use their right to vote.
II. No, the right to vote gives the real taste to the citizens.
Q15. Statement: Should it be made mandatory for major branches of nationalised banks in each city to change soiled notes?
Arguments: 
I. Yes, these branches have a good network and enjoy more vicinity with the common man in comparison with other branches, and will thus be helpful in ensuring clean notes policy of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
II. No, the major branches have a lot of work to do; making it mandatory to change the soiled notes will increase the burden of these banks and effect badly on their efficiency. 
Solutions
S1. Ans.(b)
Sol. The word ‘just’ implies that it must be assumed that people want ads at the lowest cost. Hence, I is not necessarily true. II is obvious; otherwise why will ads like this be given?
S2. Ans.(a)
Sol.  notice given by the XYZ department clearly mentions the ill-effect Of drinking. The motive behind mentioning the ill-effect must be to restrict drinkers from drinking. Now, how can the motive be fulfilled? Obviously, I must be assumed. II is too specific. Hence, II is not implicit. 
S3. Ans.(d)
Sol. The statement does not mention the specific reason behind the view of the speaker. Hence, both I and II are not implicit.
S4. Ans. (e)
Sol. How will making it ‘mandatory’ make democracy more meaningful? Obviously, both I and II must be assumed. 
S5. Ans.(a)
Sol. Why has the FAO made such a declaration? Why does it need worldwide efforts? Obviously, it must be assuming the problem quite alarming. Hence, I is implicit. But, II is not necessarily valid.
S6. Ans.(b) 
Sol. I is not advisable because it is unconstitutional. II is desirable because it will control the situation.
S7. Ans.(a) 
Sol. I is advisable because better management is always required to control a large gathering. II is not advisable because it is unconstitutional.
S8. Ans.(c)
Sol. Here if II does not work I will give Indian agriculture a protection to compete with the international companies. 
S9. Ans.(b)
Sol. I is not advisable because it will not solve the problem.  II is advisable. It will certainly reduce the number of accidents to some extent. 
S10. Ans.(d)
Sol. Both I and II are not valid courses of action because they won’t benefit the team or our objectives. 
S11. Ans. (b)
Sol.  Argument I do not go properly into the reason. Hence, it is not strong. But argument II is strong because it mentions how the move will bring good results.
S12. Ans.(a)
Sol. I is strong. No doubt, awareness of farmers will impact positively on agriculture produce. But the statement does not mention whether these call centre will provide free services or not. Hence, II is not strong. 
S13. Ans.(e)
Sol.  Both are strong because films create strong impression both on the positive and on the negative sides.
S14. Ans.(d)
Sol.  Argument I focuses on an irrelevant aspect while II is a vague argument. 
S15. Ans.(e)
Sol. Argument I is strong if you keep in mind the accessibility factor. But II is also strong because it will have a negative, undesirable impact on the economy of the country.
