4. ADB approves USD 3 million grant to India to combat COVID-19

Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved USD 3 million (about Rs 22 crore) grant to India from its Asia Pacific Disaster Response Fund to further support the government”s emergency response to COVID-19 pandemic. The grant, which is financed by the Japanese government, will be used to procure thermal scanners and essential commodities to strengthen India’s COVID-19 response. This support will enhance disease surveillance and help in early detection, contact tracing, and treatment.

1. Fleet of 5 Rafale multi-role combat jets arrived in India

  • A fleet of five French-manufactured Rafale multi-role combat jets arrived in India.
  • Rafale Jets landed at the Ambala Air Force base after covering a distance of 7,000 km from the Merignac airbase in French port city of Bordeaux.
  • Two Sukhoi 30 MKIs escorted the fleet of Rafale jets after they entered the Indian air space. The fleet, which comprises three single seater and two twin seater aircraft, would be inducted into the IAF as part of its Ambala-based No 17 Squadron, also known as the ‘Golden Arrows’.
  • Government of India signed a Rs 59,000-crore deal with French aerospace major Dassault Aviation on September 23, 2016 to procure 36 Rafale jets.
  • Rafale multi-role combat jets are considered one of the most potent combat jets globally and will provide India’s air power a strategic edge over its adversaries in the neighbourhood.
  • The delivery of all 36 aircraft will be completed on schedule by the end of 2021.

2. Schemes for promotion of Bulk Drugs & Medical Devices Parks

  • Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Shri DV Sadananda Gowda has launched four schemes for the promotion of domestic manufacturing of bulk drugs and medical devices parks in the country.
  • The Department of Pharmaceuticals has formulated four schemes, two each for Bulk Drugs and Medical Devices parks.
  • These schemes will work towards the development of Indian pharmaceutical capacities and reduce India’s dependence on imports, making it self reliant.

The key features of the four schemes are:

  • The scheme will remain open for applications for a period of 120 days from the date of issuance of guidelines.
  • The Scheme for promotion of Bulk Drug Parks aims for the establishment of 3 bulk drug parks in the country. Maximum grant-in-aid for one bulk drug park is limited to Rs.1000 crore.
  • Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for promoting domestic manufacturing of Medical Devices aims to boost domestic manufacturing of medical devices in four target segments. This will be achieved by offering financial incentives on sales to a maximum number of 28 selected applicants for a period of 5 years.

3. IMF Grants $4.3 bn to South Africa to fight COVID-19

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved USD 4.3 billion to South Africa in emergency funding, the largest amount given to any country to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The funds “support the authorities’ efforts in addressing the challenging health situation and economic impact of the COVID-19 shock”.
  • South Africa is the worst-hit country in the continent with over 4,50,000 cases.

  • Bangladeshi pacer, Kazi Anik Islam has been handed a 2-year ban by the national cricket board for failing a dope test in 2018.
  • Kazi, who was Bangladesh’s leading wicket-taker in the 2018 U-19 World Cup, tested positive for Methamphetamine, a prohibited substance, during a National Cricket League game in the same year.
  • The 21-year-old admitted to the offence. His two-year ban began on February 8, 2019.

  • The founder and President of Balala Hakula Sangham, P Achyuta Rao passed away due to COVID-19. He was a well-known child rights activist and had founded Balala Hakula Sangham in 1984.
  • Rao is known to have helped prevent child marriages, incidents of child sexual abuse, and child labour.
  • Rao recently filed a petition in Telangana High Court demanding that mid-day meal be served to students in government schools since they have not been able to access it due to the pandemic-imposed lockdown.

  • The COVID Protection System for Workplace has been unveiled by the CSIR-CMERI, Durgapur.
  • The COPS for Workplace comprises of three units namely contactless Solar Based Intelligent Mask Automated Dispensing Unit cum Thermal Scanner (IntelliMAST), Touchless Faucet (TouF) and 360° Car Flusher.
  • IntelliMAST: With the help of customised Software solutions, this intelligent surveillance kiosk will determine the body temperature and finds out whether an individual is wearing Face Mask or not.
  • Touchless Faucet (TouF): This system has been launched for households and Office Spaces. It dispenses Liquid Soap and Water from the same Faucet with a time-gap of 30 seconds, and help in containing the spread of infection among the family members, for any asymptomatic individual.
  • 360° Car Flusher: This system will be applicable to sanitize cars as it comprises a Sodium Hypochlorite Water Screen which uses specialised Nozzle Design to ensure that the Sanitizer Diffused Water is evenly spread over and under the Car Body/Wheels with adequate Water Force and coverage.

10. India & US conducts Passage Exercise in Indian Ocean

  • Indian Navy has conducted a Passage Exercise (PASSEX), a high-end joint naval exercise with the US Navy in the Indian Ocean.
  • The Passage Exercise has been designed to maximize training and interoperability, including air defense.
  • PASSEX featured the participation of four Indian naval ships, including a stealth corvette which teamed up with USS Nimitz along with Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Princeton (CG 59) and Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers USS Sterett (DDG 104) and USS Ralph Johnson (DDG 114) in the Eastern Indian Ocean.

  • The indigenously developed drones are sent in order to provide accurate surveillance along the Line of Actual Control in high altitude and mountainous terrains of Eastern Ladakh.
  • Bharat Drones is a series of drones that comes under one of the world’s lightest and agile drone surveillance systems and is made in India.

  • International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) has launched an e-Portal named “Automobile Solutions Portal for Industry, Research & Education (ASPIRE)”.
  • ASPIRE has been launched to improve the technological capability of Indian automotive sector with the help of exchange of knowledge & expertise, to make them self reliant and to enable the growth of automobile sector including overall socio-economic progress of the country.

2. United Arab Emirates launches “Hope” mission to “Mars”

  • A mission titled as “Hope” has been launched to “Mars” by the United Arab Emirates.
  • With this mission, UAE aims to provide a complete picture of the Martian atmosphere for the first time, studying daily and seasonal changes.
  • An unmanned “Hope” Probe blasted off from Japan’s Tanegashima Space Center at 1:58 a.m. (UAE time) for a seven-month journey to the red planet and is expected to enter Mars orbit by February 2021, which also marks the 50th anniversary of the unification of the UAE, an alliance of seven emirates.
  • The journey of “Hope” would be tracked by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) in Dubai.
  • The Hope probe constitutes three different instruments namely an imager and two spectrometers. The “Imager” will facilitate detailed images of the planet’s surface while all three will provide data to the scientists in order to track what ingredients are located where in the atmosphere of Mars.
  • The probe will not land on the Red Planet, but instead orbit it for a whole Martian year i.e. for 687 days.
  • The “Hope” mission to “Mars”, also called Emirates Mars Mission costed $200 million and is UAE’s first foray into interplanetary exploration.

9. Civil rights leader Cordy Tindell Vivian passes away

  • A civil rights veteran, The Rev Cordy Tindell Vivian who worked alongside the Rev Martin Luther King Jr, passed away.
  • Vivian led the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and became its interim president in 2012. He also helped in organizing the Freedom Rides to integrate buses across the south and trained waves of activists in non-violent protest.
  • Vivian was honored by the Barack Obama with the presidential medal of freedom in 2013.
  • Vivian also played an instrumental role in passing of the the Voting Rights Act when he tried to register Black voters in Selma, Alabama, that sparked hundreds, then thousands, to march across the Edmund G Pettus bridge.

10. Eminent mathematician C S Seshadri passes away

  • Eminent Indian mathematician of the post-Independence era, Professor C S Seshadri, passed away. He was the founder and Director-Emeritus of the Chennai Mathematical Institute, an institute for the study of mathematics in India.
  • Prof. Seshadri is known for his work in algebraic geometry. The Seshadri constant (in algebraic geometry) is named after him. He was a recipient of country’s third-highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan in 2009.

11. Bollywood Filmmaker Rajat Mukherjee passes away

  • Bollywood director Rajat Mukherjee passed away. He was known for directing films like Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya which was released in 2001 and Road starring Vivek Oberoi and Antara Mali which was released in 2002.

12. Mobile App of “PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi” launched

  • The mobile application of PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) has been launched to offer user friendly digital interface to the Lending Institutions (LIs) as well as to their field functionaries in order to source and process loan applications to the street vendors under the scheme.
  • The launch of the mobile app is a step towards boosting the use of digital technology and will ensure maximum coverage of the scheme.
  • The mobile app will promote paper-less digital accessing of micro-credit facilities by the Street Vendors and will give impetus to the implementation strategy of the PM SVANidhi scheme.
  • The application have various features such as vendor search in the survey data, e-KYC of applicants, processing of applications, as well as real time monitoring.
  • Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs launched the PM SVANidhi scheme to provide affordable Working Capital loan to street vendors in order to enable them resume their livelihoods that have been adversely affected due to COVID-19 lockdown.
