Example: Protest in all its manifestations represents expression.
1. Manifestation [man-uh-fuh-stey-shuh n, -fe-]
Noun: an act of manifesting; the state of being manifested; outward or perceptible indication; materialization.
Synonyms: demonstration, explanation, expression, indication, instance, meaning, phenomenon.
Example: Expression of cultural traits of individuals, communities, nationalities may also be discerned from custom and the food we eat.
2. Discern [dih-surn, -zurn]
Verb: to perceive by the sight or some other sense or by the intellect; see, recognize, or apprehend; to distinguish mentally; recognize as distinct or different; discriminate.
Synonyms: anticipate, ascertain, detect, determine, differentiate, discriminate, distinguish.
Antonyms: confuse, doubt, miss, mix up, overlook, forget.
Example: Muzzling freedom of expression.
3. Muzzle [muhz-uh l]
Noun: the mouth, or end for discharge, of the barrel of a gun, pistol, etc; the projecting part of the head of an animal, including jaws, mouth, and nose; a device, usually an arrangement of straps or wires, placed over an animal’s mouth to prevent the animal from biting, eating, etc.
Verb: to put a muzzle on (an animal or its mouth) so as to prevent biting, eating, etc; to restrain from speech, the expression of opinion, etc.
Synonyms: cage, cover, envelope, gag, guard, sheath.
Example: The preceding enunciation is necessary to put in perspective controversies that have bedevilled the national discourse that has consumed public attention.
4. Enunciation [ih-nuhn-see-ey-shuh n]
Noun: an act or manner of enunciating; utterance or pronunciation; a formal announcement or statement.
Synonyms: articulation, elocution, fluency, phonation, phraseology, pronunciation.
5. Bedevil [bih-dev-uh l]
Verb: to torment or harass maliciously or diabolically, as with doubts, distractions, or worries; to possess, as with a devil; bewitch; to cause confusion or doubt in; muddle; confound; to beset or hamper continuously.
Synonyms: annoy, beset, bother, harass, irritate, torment.
Antonyms: aid, assist, delight, help, make happy, please, soothe.
6. Discourse [noun dis-kawrs]
Noun: communication of thought by words; talk; conversation; a formal discussion of a subject in speech or writing, as a dissertation, treatise, sermon, etc.
Synonyms: communication, conversation, discussion, essay, lecture, monologue, rhetoric.
Antonyms: quiet, silence.
Example: The recent decision of the Ministry of Environment prohibiting trade of cattle and other animals meant for slaughter is baffling.
7. Baffle [baf-uh l]
Verb: to confuse, bewilder, or perplex; to frustrate or confound; thwart by creating confusion or bewilderment; to check or deflect the movement of (sound, light, fluids, etc.); to equip with a baffle or baffles.
Synonyms: bewildering, confusing, enigmatic, incomprehensible, mystifying, perplexing.
Antonyms: clear, comprehensible, fathomable.
Example: My reservation against sting journalism goes back to the days when Tehelka ventured into ‘Operation West End’ that looked at murky deals in defence procurement.
8. Venture [ven-cher]
Noun: an undertaking involving uncertainty as to the outcome, especially a risky or dangerous one; a business enterprise or speculation in which something is risked in the hope of profit; a commercial or other speculation; the money, ship, cargo, merchandise, or the like, on which risk is taken in a business enterprise or speculation.
Synonyms: adventured, attempted, chanced, dared, experimented, gambled, hazarded, tested.
9. Murky [mur-kee]
Adjective: dark, gloomy, and cheerless; obscure or thick with mist, haze, etc., as the air; vague; unclear; confused
Synonyms: cloudy, dark, dim, dirty, dismal, dreary, foggy, fuzzy, misty.
Antonyms: apparent, bright, brilliant, cheerful, clean, clear, distinct.
10. Procurement [proh-kyoo r-muh nt, pruh‐]
Noun: the act of procuring, or obtaining or getting by effort, care, or the use of special means; the act of obtaining equipment, materials, or supplies.
Synonyms: acquisition, acquirement, appropriation, attainment, procuring.
