Example: At that time, India’s efforts seemed minimal, a token attempt at keeping a foothold in a continent that was fast falling into China’s sphere of influence.
1. Token [toh-kuh n]
Adjective: minimal; serving as a token; a token gift; a token male on an all-female staff; slight; perfunctory.

Noun: something serving to represent or indicate some fact, event, feeling, etc.; sign; a memento; souvenir; keepsake; something used to indicate authenticity, authority, etc.; emblem; badge; a stamped piece of metal, issued as a limited medium of exchange, as for bus fares, at a nominal value much greater than its commodity value; anything of only nominal value similarly used, as paper currency; an item, idea, person, etc., representing a group; a part as representing the whole; sample; indication.
Verb (used with object): to be a token of; signify; symbolize.
Synonyms: badge, expression, manifestation, memento, proof, souvenir, symbol, clue, demonstration, earnest, evidence, favour, gift.
Antonym: break.
2. Foothold [foo t-hohld]
Noun: a secure position, especially a firm basis for further progress or development; a place or support for the feet; a place where a person may stand or walk securely.
Synonyms: footing, niche, perch, toehold, crevice, hold, purchase, space.
Example: To begin with, India is working on a maritime outreach to extend its Sagarmala programme to the southern coastal African countries with ‘blue economies’.
3. Maritime [mar-i-tahym]
Adjective: connected with the sea in relation to navigation, shipping, etc.; of or relating to the sea; bordering on the sea.
Synonyms: aquatic, deep-sea, marine, naval, oceangoing, seafaring, seagoing, oceanic, pelagic.
4. Outreach [verb out-reech; noun, adjective out-reech]
Noun: an act or instance of reaching out; length or extent of reach; the act of extending services, benefits, etc., to a wider section of the population, as in community work.
Verb (used with object): to reach beyond; exceed; to reach out; extend.
Verb (used without object): to reach out.
Adjective: concerned with extending community services, benefits, etc.
Synonyms: eclipse, outpace, outstrip, top, beat, best, better, cap, distance, excel, outdo, outrun, outshine.
Example: India has tapped other development partners of Africa, including Japan, which sent a major delegation to the AfDB meeting.
5. Tap [tap]
Verb (used with object): to strike with a light but audible blow or blows; hit with repeated, slight blows; to make, put, etc., by tapping; to strike (the fingers, a foot, a pencil, etc.) upon or against something, especially with repeated light blows.
Verb (used without object): to strike lightly but audibly, as to attract attention; to strike light blows; to tap-dance.
Noun: a light but audible blow; the sound made by this; a piece of metal attached to the toe or heel of a shoe, as for reinforcement or for making the tapping of a dancer more audible.
Synonyms: knock, pat, touch, beat, bob, dab, drum, palpate, percuss, rap, strike.
Antonyms: lose.
6. Delegation [del-i-gey-shuh n]
Noun: a group or body of delegates; the body of delegates chosen to represent a political unit, as a state, in an assembly; the act of delegating; the state of being delegated.
Synonyms: appointment, apportioning, authorization, charge, commissioning, committal, consignment, conveyance, conveying, deputation, devolution, installation, investiture, mandate, nomination, ordination, reference, relegation, transference, trust.
Antonyms: keeping.
Example: He noted Saudi Arabia’s attempts at “empowering women”, overlooked its disastrous military operation in Yemen and assailed Iran for fueling “the fires of sectarian conflict and terror”.
7. Assail [uh-seyl]
Verb (used with object): to attack vigorously or violently; assault; to attack with arguments, criticism, ridicule, abuse, etc.; to undertake with the purpose of mastering; to impinge upon; make an impact on; beset.
Synonyms: bash, berate, blast, criticize, impugn, lambaste, revile, trash, vilify, abuse, assault, beset, blister, bust, charge.
Antonyms: compliment, praise, uphold, exonerate, help, let go, protect, retreat, surrender, yield.
8. Sectarian [sek-tair-ee-uh n]
Adjective: of or relating to sectaries or sects; narrowly confined or devoted to a particular sect; narrowly confined or limited in interest, purpose, scope, etc.
Noun: a member of a sect.; a bigoted or narrow-minded adherent of a sect.
Synonyms: factional, parochial, partisan, dissident, doctrinaire, fanatic, limited, local, nonconformist, provincial, splinter, bigoted, clannish, cliquish, dogmatic.
Example: America will also supply its rich Arab allies advanced weapons.
9. Ally [verb uh-lahy; noun al-ahy, uh-lahy]
Noun: a person, group, or nation that is associated with another or others for some common cause or purpose
Verb (used with object): to unite formally, as by treaty, league, marriage, or the like (usually followed by with or to); to associate or connect by some mutual relationship, as resemblance or friendship.
Verb (used without object): to enter into an alliance; join; unite.
Synonyms: associate, colleague, friend, partner, accessory, accomplice, co-worker, coadjutor, collaborator, confederate, helper.
Antonyms: antagonist, detractor, enemy, foe, opponent.
Example: The cyber-attackers who unleashed it, as yet unknown, have essentially used chinks in Microsoft’s outdated software.
10. Chink [chingk]
Noun: a crack, cleft, or fissure; a narrow opening
Verb (used with object): to fill up chinks in.
Synonyms: crevice, fissure, aperture, cleft, crack, cut, gap, hole, rift, slit, slot, space.
Antonyms: closing, closure, solid.
