PM Modi Inaugurates SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026 at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, on September 17.
The three-day event is being held from September 17 to 19 under the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem.”
The event is organised by the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), MeitY and SEMI.
It brings together semiconductor companies, policymakers, investors, researchers, startups, academics and students to discuss chip manufacturing, design, packaging, AI, supply chains and skilling.
The “Sand to Silicon to Systems” Value Chain Experience showcases different stages of the semiconductor ecosystem.

APEDA Partners Gulfood Organiser to Expand India’s Food Exports

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) signed an MoU with InD Events Dubai, organiser of Gulfood.
India will be the Official Partner Country for Gulfood 2027 for the second consecutive year.
Gulfood 2027 will be held from March 15–19, 2027, in Dubai, UAE.
The partnership will support exporters, MSMEs, FPOs, startups and women- and SC/ST-led businesses in reaching international buyers.
More than 500 Indian companies participated in Gulfood 2026, showcasing products such as Basmati rice, millets, spices, tea, fruits and processed foods.

Health Ministry Proposes CCTV for Prescription Drug Sales

The Union Health Ministry proposed amendments to the Drugs Rules, 1945, requiring CCTV surveillance at licensed premises supplying prescription medicines.
The draft notification issued on September 8, 2026, proposes inserting sub-rule (2A) into Rule 65.
Prescription-based supplies, except wholesale dealing, would need to take place under CCTV surveillance.
CCTV recordings would have to be preserved for at least three months.
The proposal aims to strengthen monitoring, create verifiable dispensing records and prevent unauthorised over-the-counter sales.

India’s Cheetah Population Reaches 52 After Four Years

India’s cheetah population has increased to 52, including 32 Indian-born cheetahs, according to the four-year review ending September 17, 2026.
49 cheetahs are at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, while three are at Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary.
Kuno has 17 cheetahs in the wild and 32 in Soft Release Bomas.

India Inaugurates 51st Doppler Weather Radar in Sambalpur

India inaugurated its 51st Doppler Weather Radar at Jamadarpali in Sambalpur, Odisha, on September 16, 2026.

It offers 150-metre resolution and updates meteorological data every 10 minutes.

The payments are linked to the Aadi farmer carbon programme launched by Grow Indigo in 2019 with technical guidance from ICAR.
Farmers adopted Direct Seeded Rice, reduced tillage and improved crop-residue management between 2019 and 2022.

Telangana CURE Bill Seeks Integrated Governance for Hyderabad Region

The Core Urban Region (Integrated Governance) Bill, 2026, or CURE Bill, was passed by the Telangana Legislative Assembly on September 12.
The Bill proposes replacing the GHMC Act, 1955, with an integrated governance framework for Hyderabad’s core urban region.
It brings the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Cyberabad Municipal Corporation and Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation under the proposed framework.
The Bill proposes a CURE Apex Governance Council for urban planning, infrastructure and civic services.

GIFT City rose nine places to 37th globally in the Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI 40) released in September 2026.
It also improved three places to rank 26th globally in FinTech.
GFCI 40 assessed 139 financial centres, with 117 included in the main index, using 144 instrumental factors and financial professionals’ assessments.
The index is produced by Z/Yen Partners with the China Development Institute and published every March and September.
Mumbai also improved to 49th position, while GIFT City hosts India’s first International Financial Services Centre.

US Federal Reserve Raises Benchmark Interest Rate by 25 Bps

He became the first Indian American and first Arizonan to receive the award in its more than 40-year history.
Panchanathan served as the 15th director of the US National Science Foundation from June 2020 to April 2025.
His research covers machine learning, ubiquitous computing and human-centred multimedia technologies.
He founded ASU’s Center for Cognitive Ubiquitous Computing and has authored nearly 500 research publications.

Anant Nag Named Dadasaheb Phalke Award Recipient for 2024

Veteran Kannada actor Anant Nag has been selected for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024 for his contribution to Indian cinema.

India Electric Mobility Index 2025 Ranks Delhi First Among States

The India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) 2025, developed by NITI Aayog and WRI India, ranked Delhi first with 84 points.
Maharashtra scored 78 points and Karnataka 73, followed by Chandigarh with 71 and Goa with 65.
The index assesses all 36 states and Union Territories using 16 indicators covering transport electrification, charging readiness and research and innovation.

Academic Freedom Index 2026 Places India in Severely Restricted Category

India was placed in the “severely restricted” category for academic freedom in Scholars at Risk’s 2026 Free to Think report.

India’s Academic Freedom Index score declined from 0.38 in 2022 to 0.14 in 2025.

Piyush Desai, Chairman of the Wagh Bakri Tea Group, died in Ahmedabad at the age of 87.

Desai played a major role in expanding Gujarat Tea Processors & Packers Limited and the Wagh Bakri brand.
The company’s tea-business roots date back to 1892, while its revenues under his leadership exceeded ₹2,000 crore.
Wagh Bakri expanded internationally to more than 30 countries, and Desai also served as chairman of FAITTA.
