What Is a Bambi Bucket? How the Indian Air Force Fought the Kasauli Forest Fire

The recent forest fire in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh, highlighted the importance of Bambi Buckets in aerial firefighting.
To contain the blaze, the Indian Air Force deployed Mil Mi-17V-5 helicopters equipped with these specialized water-carrying devices, conducting 150+ sorties and dropping 62,500 litres of water.
Invented by Don Arney and commercialized by SEI Industries, Bambi Buckets collect water from nearby sources and release it precisely over fire zones.
Their ability to access remote, mountainous, and inaccessible terrain makes them highly effective for wildfire suppression and disaster response operations worldwide.

What Is Samadhan Didi? India’s New AI Chatbot for Citizen Grievances Explained

Dr. Jitendra Singh launched Samadhan Didi, an AI-powered voice chatbot integrated with the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS).
Developed by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances in collaboration with Bhashini, it enables citizens to register grievances by speaking in their native language.
The chatbot uses artificial intelligence and natural language processing to understand complaints, ask follow-up questions, identify the relevant department, and automatically file grievances.
Supporting 22 constitutional languages, it aims to enhance accessibility, inclusivity, digital governance, and ease of public service delivery while ensuring data privacy and security within government infrastructure.

D.K. Shivakumar to Be Sworn in as Karnataka Chief Minister on June 3

D. K. Shivakumar has been unanimously elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) and is set to take oath as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka on 3 June 2026.
His name was proposed by outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and supported by G. Parameshwara during a CLP meeting at Vidhana Soudha.
Following his election, Shivakumar formally staked claim to form the government before Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot.
The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Glass House, Lok Bhavan and is expected to be a simple, low-profile event.

UPI Hits Record High in May 2026 with ₹29.90 Trillion Worth Transactions

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) achieved a new milestone in May 2026, recording its highest-ever monthly transaction volume and value since its launch in 2016.
According to the National Payments Corporation of India, UPI processed 23.20 billion transactions worth ₹29.90 trillion, reflecting a 4% growth in volume and 3% growth in value over April 2026.
The platform handled an average of 748 million daily transactions, highlighting its position as India’s preferred digital payment system.
The strong rebound after April’s decline underscores the resilience of the digital payments ecosystem, with UPI increasingly used for everyday transactions such as shopping, bill payments, transport, and food delivery, while credit cards continue to dominate higher-value purchases.

GST Revenue Hits ₹1.94 Lakh Crore in May 2026 on Strong Domestic Demand

India’s GST collections continued to show strong growth in May 2026, with gross GST revenue reaching ₹1.94 lakh crore, a 3.2% increase over May 2025.
The collections included CGST (₹37,397 crore), SGST (₹45,143 crore), domestic IGST (₹51,990 crore), and import IGST (₹59,654 crore).
Growth was driven by robust domestic demand, with taxable goods supplies rising 26.9% and services supplies increasing 22.2%.
Import-related GST collections also surged 19.1%, indicating stronger industrial and manufacturing activity.
Additionally, GST refunds totaled ₹27,281 crore, reflecting continued support for businesses and exporters through improved liquidity.

India Sends Emergency Medical Aid to Africa Amid Ebola Outbreak

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced the World No Tobacco Day 2026 Awards, recognizing individuals, researchers, government agencies, and organizations across all six WHO regions for outstanding contributions to tobacco control and public health.
The WHO Director-General Special Award was conferred on Dr. Shaya Mohsin Zindani (Yemen).
Awardees came from Africa, the Americas, Eastern Mediterranean, Europe, South-East Asia, and Western Pacific regions.
India was recognized through Rajasthan’s Health Department and ICMR–National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research for their efforts in tobacco prevention, awareness, and policy implementation.

India Sends Emergency Medical Aid to Africa Amid Ebola Outbreak

India has extended emergency medical assistance to African nations battling the Ebola outbreak by supplying essential healthcare materials to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
The first consignment, handed over by Upender Singh Rawat, includes diagnostic kits, therapeutic medicines, protective equipment, infection-control materials, and case-management supplies.
The aid will support affected communities in Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Highlighting India’s commitment to global health security and South-South cooperation, S. Jaishankar reaffirmed continued support for African countries, further strengthening India-Africa health cooperation and emergency response partnerships.

India Signs BrahMos Missile Deal with Vietnam, Indonesia Agreement Nears Completion

India’s BrahMos missile exports are expanding rapidly, with Vietnam having signed a deal for the BrahMos missile and Indonesia nearing the final stages of negotiations, according to Rajesh Kumar Singh. Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue, he highlighted India’s growing role as a defence manufacturing and export hub.
The Vietnam agreement marks a major boost to India–Vietnam defence cooperation, while Indonesia could soon become another ASEAN nation to acquire the missile system.
Earlier, the Philippines became the first foreign buyer in 2022 under a $375 million deal.
Developed jointly by India and Russia, the BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile known for its high speed, precision strike capability, land-, sea-, and air-launch variants, long operational range, and difficulty to intercept, making it highly attractive for coastal and maritime defence.

Previously serving as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, he brings over three decades of operational, strategic, and leadership experience to one of the Indian Navy’s most important commands.

PM SVANidhi has completed six years of successful implementation, emerging as a key initiative for supporting urban street vendors in India.
Launched in June 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, the scheme provides collateral-free working capital loans while promoting financial inclusion, digital transactions, and access to social welfare schemes.
Over 75.5 lakh vendors have benefited, with ₹17,800 crore+ disbursed and 1.12 crore loans sanctioned.
The scheme has empowered 34.81 lakh women vendors, digitally onboarded 55 lakh vendors, and extended substantial support to the North-Eastern states, strengthening livelihoods and economic empowerment.
