India Reaches Landmark of 100 Ramsar Sites with Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary

India achieved a major environmental milestone as the Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal) in Uttar Pradesh was designated the 100th Ramsar Convention site in India on World Environment Day 2026.
This recognition highlights India’s growing commitment to wetland conservation and biodiversity protection.
The sanctuary, located in Ballia district, supports migratory birds and aquatic ecosystems.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the achievement, praising conservation efforts and community participation in preserving ecologically important habitats across the country.

APEDA Facilitates India’s First Millet Functional Food Export to New Zealand

On 3 June 2026, India achieved a milestone with its first export of botanical-infused ready-to-cook millet functional foods from Karnataka to New Zealand.
The one-metric-tonne shipment was exported by M/s Infini Agrotek LLP, Bengaluru, with support from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
These value-added products combine millet nutrition with botanical ingredients, catering to global demand for healthy and sustainable foods.
The export highlights India’s growing millet industry, strengthens farmers’ income opportunities, and showcases APEDA’s role in expanding agricultural exports through international trade promotion.

FSSAI Launches Official Vegan Logo to Improve Consumer Awareness and Transparency

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has introduced an official vegan logo to identify certified vegan food products in India.
Under the amended Vegan Foods Regulations, approved vegan products must display the logo, featuring a green square, a stylized “V,” and a sprouting leaf symbol representing plant-based and sustainable foods.
The requirement will become mandatory from 1 July 2027.
The initiative aims to improve transparency, prevent misleading claims, and help consumers easily identify foods free from animal-derived ingredients, additives, or processing aids.
Vegan foods exclude dairy products, honey, and other animal-based ingredients, while including fruits, vegetables, grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, and plant-based alternatives. The move aligns with global food-labeling practices and supports informed, sustainable consumer choices.

West Bengal Joins NeVA, Becomes 33rd Legislature on Digital Platform

On 4 June 2026, the West Bengal Legislative Assembly signed an MoU to implement the National e-Vidhan Application, becoming India’s 33rd legislature to adopt the digital platform.
Signed in the presence of Kiren Rijiju, Arjun Ram Meghwal, and L. Murugan, the initiative supports the “One Nation, One Application” vision.
NeVA aims to digitize legislative processes, enabling paperless governance, better record management, transparency, and real-time access to bills, questions, notices, and proceedings, thereby enhancing efficiency, accountability, and citizen engagement in legislative functioning.

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Inaugurates 18 ‘Namo Oxygen Parks’ on World Environment Day

Rekha Gupta inaugurated 18 Namo Oxygen Parks at Maidangarhi, Delhi, on World Environment Day 2026 to enhance urban greenery and environmental sustainability.
The initiative aims to improve air quality, increase green cover, and encourage community participation in conservation.
During the event, attended by Bhupender Yadav, Delhi announced a target of planting 15 lakh trees and saplings.

The United Nations General Assembly elected five new non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term: Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe.
Their two-year tenure begins on 1 January 2027.

University of Liverpool to Establish First Indian Campus in Bengaluru

The University of Liverpool has received a Letter of Approval (LoA) from India’s Ministry of Education to establish its campus in Bengaluru.
The approval, presented by Vineet Joshi to Richard Grose, marks a significant step under the National Education Policy 2020.

India and UK Launch Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory

India and the United Kingdom have jointly launched the India-UK Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory (GSCO) in New Delhi to strengthen cooperation in critical minerals essential for clean energy, electric vehicles, semiconductors, and advanced technologies.
The initiative was launched by G. Kishan Reddy and Yvette Cooper.
The GSCO will serve as a data-driven platform to monitor global mineral supply chains, identify market risks, track resource availability, and assess geopolitical vulnerabilities.
It has been developed through collaboration between TEXMiN, Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad, and University of Cambridge.

RBI Monetary Policy Meeting June 2026: Repo rate unchanged at 5.25%

At its 61st Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting held from 3–5 June 2026, the Reserve Bank of India, chaired by Sanjay Malhotra, kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.25%, with the SDF rate at 5.00% and MSF rate at 5.50%, while maintaining a neutral policy stance.
The decision was unanimous and reflected concerns over geopolitical tensions, rising crude oil prices, supply-chain disruptions, and inflation risks.
RBI projected FY 2026–27 GDP growth at 6.6% and CPI inflation at 5.1%, emphasizing a data-driven, balanced approach to supporting growth while controlling inflation.

Neelkanth Mishra Appointed India’s Next Executive Director at the World Bank

The Government of India has appointed Neelkanth Mishra as India’s next Executive Director at the World Bank in Washington, D.C.
Approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, he will serve a three-year term and represent the South Asian constituency comprising India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka.
He succeeds Parameswaran Iyer. Currently Chief Economist at Axis Bank and a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, Mishra is a noted economist with extensive experience in economic policy, financial markets, and research, including nearly two decades at Credit Suisse.

MY Bharat Sets Guinness World Record Through VBYLD Quiz

India’s youth engagement platform Mera Yuva Bharat, under the Department of Youth Affairs, earned a Guinness World Records title for the highest number of users completing an online quiz in one week.
The record was achieved through the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue Quiz, with 390,812 verified participants completing the quiz between 25–31 October 2025.
The initiative, aimed at promoting the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047, attracted over 50.42 lakh youth from all states and union territories.

Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit Appointed as Next Indian Air Force Vice Chief

On 5 June 2026, Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit was appointed as the next Vice Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS) of the Indian Air Force and will assume office on 1 July 2026.
Currently serving as Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (CISC), he was commissioned into the IAF in 1986 and has over 3,300 flying hours on more than 20 aircraft types.
A qualified flying instructor and experimental test pilot, he has contributed significantly to fighter aircraft modernization, indigenous defence projects, flight testing, and joint military reforms.

He served as Secretary General of the Lok Sabha (1983–1990) and was widely respected for strengthening parliamentary procedures and democratic institutions.
Kashyap authored over 100 books on the Indian Constitution, governance, and electoral reforms.

Arjuna Awardee Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal Passes Away at 67, Indian Athletics Mourns a Legend

Indian athletics mourned the passing of Arjuna Awardee Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, who died at 67 after battling lung cancer.
A dominant shot putter, he was a 10-time national champion between 1981–1992 and won a bronze medal at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi.
He also earned multiple medals at the Asian Athletics Championships, including gold in 1985.
Dhaliwal set an Asian record of 18.71m in 1986 and received the Arjuna Award in 1987. Post-retirement, he served as coach and mentor, shaping young athletes in India.

Former IAS Officer and Eminent Odia Writer Jagannath Prasad Das Passes Away at 90

India’s literary and administrative world mourned the passing of Jagannath Prasad Das at the age of 90.
A celebrated Odia author, poet, playwright, painter, and former IAS officer, he made lasting contributions to literature and public service.
His acclaimed novel A Time Elsewhere (Desha Kala Patra) is considered a landmark in Odia literature.
He also served as Collector of Kalahandi during the 1966 famine relief efforts. Das later resigned from the IAS in 1984 to pursue literature full-time, leaving a rich legacy in both governance and culture.
