- With the enforcement of the new Act, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 will stand repealed from the same date, marking a historic shift in India’s rural development framework towards a more integrated and productivity-oriented model aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
- Under the new framework, every rural household with adult members willing to undertake unskilled manual work will receive a statutory guarantee of 125 days of wage employment in every financial year.
- The enhanced employment guarantee aims to strengthen livelihood security, increase rural incomes, and support sustainable village-level development.
- Employment must be provided within the prescribed timeframe after workers demand work, failing which eligible workers will receive unemployment allowance as per the provisions of the Act.
- The Act also places strong emphasis on transparent and timely wage payments. Wages will continue to be transferred directly into workers’ bank or post office accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
- Wages are to be paid weekly or within fifteen days from the closure of the muster roll. In case of delay, workers will be entitled to compensation under the provisions of the Act.
- For the financial year 2026–27, the Central Government has allocated ₹95,692.31 crore for the programme, the highest-ever Budget Estimate allocation for a rural employment scheme.
- Including the expected contribution from States, the total programme outlay is estimated to exceed ₹1.51 lakh crore, which is expected to accelerate rural infrastructure development, employment generation, and income enhancement in rural areas.
