Key Findings for India

The share of undernourished people in India declined from 21.1% (2004–06) to 9.8% (2023–25).
The number of undernourished people fell by about 101 million, from 243.9 million to 142.5 million during the same period.
Despite this progress, around 100 million people in India still face hunger.
In 2025, about 520.1 million people (35.5% of the population) were unable to afford a healthy diet.
This share declined from 59.8% in 2017, indicating improvement in affordability.
The report notes that the decline among lower-middle-income countries was driven mainly by India.
If India is excluded, the number of people unable to afford a healthy diet in lower-middle-income countries shows an increasing trend.
