Across most States and UTs, urban fertility rates were lower than rural fertility rates. However, Kerala recorded a higher TFR in urban areas, while Tamil Nadu showed identical TFR levels in both rural and urban areas.
India has witnessed a steady decline in fertility over the decades. The TFR decreased from 5.2 in 1971 to 4.5 in 1981, and further declined from 3.6 in 1991 to 1.9 in 2024.
In rural India, the TFR declined from 5.4 in 1971 to 2.1 in 2024, while in urban areas it fell from 4.1 to 1.5 during the same period.
