Daily Vocabulary for Bank Exams: 21st April 2019

Vocabulary is an important part of English that helps you deal with all kinds of questions in objective as well as descriptive papers of various exams. In the recently concluded Banking Exams, we witnessed that a major part of the exam was based on vocabulary. Many questions were vocab based and we can expect the same in the upcoming exams. 1. FURLOUGH (noun) लम्बी छुट्टी
Meaning: leave of absence, especially that granted to a member of the services or a missionary.
Synonyms: break, rest, recess, day off.
Antonyms: rehire, recall, travail, toil.
Usage: I have just learned that Cousin George has got his furlough extended thirty days.

2. REPROBATE (noun) नीच
Meaning: an unprincipled person.
Synonyms: rogue, scoundrel, villain, wretch.
Antonyms: upright, virtuous, principled, righteous
Usage: Although the old man pretended to be a reprobate in public, in private he did a lot of good deeds for the homeless.

3. BREVIARY (noun) सार-संग्रह
Meaning: a short statement of the main points.
Synonyms: summary, conspectus, encapsulation, outline.
Antonyms: enlargement, expansion, supplement, amplification.
Usage: The Second Vatican Council revised the Breviary and changed its name to Liturgy of the Hours.

4. REDACT (verb) संपादित करना
Meaning: edit (text) for publication.
Synonyms: correct, rectify, repair, fix.
Antonyms: befoul, deteriorate, diminish, hinder.
Usage: Some of the conclusions in the report have been redacted.

5. STODGY (adjective) घिसा पिटा
Meaning: Dull and uninspired; lacking originality or excitement
Synonyms: uninteresting, dreary, uninspired, monotonous.
Antonyms: exciting, creative, breathtaking, enthralling.
Usage: Most of my students used informal, asymmetrical balance, as formal balance can seem stodgy and dull.

6. DOWNTRODDEN (adjective) लताड़ा हुआ
Meaning: Oppressed or treated badly by people in power.
Synonyms: persecuted, exploited, repressed, tyrannized.
Antonyms: protected, respected, guarded, favored.
Usage: His claim to be a representative of the downtrodden masses is, of course, completely bogus.

7. BUDGE (verb) हटना
Meaning: Change an opinion.
Synonyms: retract, yield, acquiesce, compromise.
Antonyms: resist, object, confront, oppose.
Usage: That’s why the bosses have so far been refusing to budge over the pay and conditions.

8. CONDIGN (adjective) अनुरूप
Meaning: appropriate to the crime or wrongdoing; fitting and deserved.
Synonyms: earned, merited, warranted, justified.
Antonyms: undeserved, undue, unfair, unjust.
Usage: Condign punishment was rare when the criminal was a man of high social standing.

9. GNAW (verb): कष्ट देना
Meaning: cause persistent distress or anxiety.
Synonyms: nag, torment, bother, fret.
Antonyms: mitigate, pacify, assist, ameliorate.
Usage: Maybe you choose to seethe silently about something, letting it gnaw away at you.

10. RELENT (verb) नरम पड़ना
Meaning: to cease resistance (as to another’s arguments, demands, or control).
Synonyms: concede, give in, submit, succumb.
Antonyms: combat, confront, counter, defy.
Usage: Because my father is very angry, he won’t relent on my harsh punishment.
