The Hindu Newspaper Editorial Vocabulary For IBPS PO 2017

Example: The display will adapt to ambient lighting, similar to a feature in some iPad Pro models.

1. Ambient [am-bee-uh nt]
Adjective: of the surrounding area or environment; completely surrounding; encompassing; creating a certain reaction or mood, often a subconscious one, by being wherever people tend to be; pertaining to or noting sounds that create a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere.
Synonyms: atmosphere, surroundings, climate, medium.

Example: The waiting period will only prolong their agony.

2. Agony [ag-uh-nee]
Noun: extreme and generally prolonged pain; intense physical or mental suffering; a display or outburst of intense mental or emotional excitement; the struggle preceding natural death; a violent struggle.
Synonyms: anguish, misery, passion, torment, torture, woe, affliction, distress, dolor, pangs, throes.
Antonyms: contentment, happiness, joy, comfort.

Example: Marriage is a sacrament in Hinduism.

3. Sacrament [sak-ruh-muh nt]
Noun: something regarded as possessing a sacred character or mysterious significance; a sign, token, or symbol; an oath; solemn pledge.
Synonyms: communion, liturgy, baptism, celebration, ceremony, confession, confirmation, custom, marriage, matrimony, oath, observance, practice, ritual, service.
Antonyms: break, denial, divorce, neglect.

Example: The court held that the waiting period should be done away with in cases where there is no way to save the marriage and all efforts at mediation and conciliation have run their course.

4. Conciliate [kuh n-sil-ee-eyt]
Verb: to overcome the distrust or hostility of; placate; win over; to win or gain (goodwill, regard, or favor); to make compatible; reconcile; to become agreeable or reconciled.
Synonyms: appeasement, rapprochement, placation, propitiation, resolution, reunion, reconcilement.

Example: Mohan Bhagwat has said that the RSS would abide by the court ruling on the Ayodhya dispute.

5. Abide [uh-bahyd]
Verb: to remain; continue; stay; to have one’s abode; dwell; reside; to continue in a particular condition, attitude, relationship, etc.; last; to put up with; tolerate; stand; to endure, sustain, or withstand without yielding or submitting; to wait for; await.
Synonyms: accept, stand for, tolerate, acknowledge, bear, concede, consent, defer, endure, receive, stand, stomach, suffer, swallow, take, withstand, be big about, bear with, hang in.
Antonyms: disallow, avoid, contradict, disagree.

Example: An alliance on track. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train deal is also a geostrategic coup for Japan.

6. Alliance [uh-lahy-uh ns]
Noun: the act of allying or state of being allied; a formal agreement or treaty between two or more nations to cooperate for specific purposes; a merging of efforts or interests by persons, families, states, or organizations; the persons or entities so allied.
Synonyms: concord, concurrence, partnership, collusion, affiliation, relation, compact, union, support, engagement, betrothal, communion, cooperation, tie, participation, accord, federation, combination, collaboration, coherence, affinity, congruity, membership.
Antonyms: discord, disunity, divorce, separation.

7. Geostrategic
Adjective: relating to the strategy required in dealing with geopolitical problems.

8. Coup [koo]
Noun: a highly successful, unexpected stroke, act, or move; a clever action or accomplishment.
Synonyms: action, overthrow, plot, revolution, accomplishment, deed, exploit, feat, stratagem, stroke, stunt, upset.
Antonym: failure.

Example: But at the centrepiece of their summitry will be the inauguration of India’s first high-speed rail corridor from Mumbai to Ahmedabad, to be developed using Japanese technology and financing.

9. Summitry [suhm-i-tree]
Noun: the act or practice of holding a summit meeting, especially to conduct diplomatic negotiations; the art or technique of conducting summit meetings; summit meetings collectively.
Synonyms: summit, conference at the summit, high-level talk, summit conference.

Example: Yet, despite this admirable track record, Japan has struggled to export its bullet train know-how, even as Mr. Abe has made selling the technology abroad a cornerstone of his game plan to revitalise the stagnant Japanese economy.

10. Know-how [noh-hou]
Noun: knowledge of how to do something; faculty or skill for a particular activity; expertise.
Synonyms: ability, aptitude, background, capability, expertise, ingenuity, knowledge, proficiency, wisdom, adroitness, art, command, craft, cunning, dexterity, experience, expertness.
Antonyms: clumsiness, ignorance, impotence, inability.
