1. Nation Pays Tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on His Death Anniversary

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several Union Ministers paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 71st death anniversary.
  • Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, known as the “Iron Man of India,” was born in Nadiad village in present-day Gujarat on October 31, 1875.
  • In India’s freedom struggle, he was a political and freedom leader.
  • He is known as the Iron Man of India because of his strong views on the union of princely states into one nation, his good attitude toward women’s emancipation, and his active participation in shaping India into what it is now.
  • Vallabhbhai Patel was given the title of ‘Sardar’ by Mahatma Gandhi.
  • In 1991, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna. Since 2014, his birthday has been celebrated as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day). Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel joined the princely kingdoms in British Indian territory, preventing India from becoming divided.
    • Due to his role in uniting the shards of princely kingdoms into a single nation, he is known as the ‘Bismarck of India.’

  • Nation celebrates Vijay Diwas, to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation war. On this day, the heroes who sacrificed their lives for war are remembered and tributes are paid to them.
  • On 16th December 1971, the chief of the Pakistani forces, General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, along with 93 thousand troops, surrendered unconditionally to the allied forces led by Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora, in Dhaka after their defeat.
  • Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on 16th December to honour the victory of the Indian armed forces over Pakistan in 1971. Vijay Diwas is celebrated to commemorate the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation. The India-Pakistan war went on for 13 days and India defeated Pakistan on 16th December 1971.

3. Tokyo Makes Solar Panels Mandatory for New Homes Built After 2025

  • The Japanese capital local assembly passed a new regulation which stated that all new houses in Tokyo built by large-scale homebuilders after April 2025 must install solar power panels to cut household carbon emissions. Currently, Japan stands at fifth spot in the world’s largest carbon emitters list.
  • This new regulation for new built homes requires about 50 major builders to equip homes of up to 2,000 square meters (21,500 square feet) with renewable energy power sources, mainly solar panels.
  • Japan is the world’s fifth-largest carbon emitter. The country has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. However, it faces difficulty as Japan has relied heavily on coal-burning thermal power after most of its nuclear reactors were in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima disaster.

4. Iran Removed From UN Commission on the Status of Women

  • Iran has been expelled from the United Nation’s Commission on the Status of Women (UNW) in a vote on which India abstained. The US proposal at the UN Economic and Social Council to remove Iran from the panel received 29 votes, while there were eight votes against and 16 abstentions in the 54-member elected body.
  • Mahsa Amin who died after being held by “morality police” in September. Her death sparked the protests, during which, “government security forces have reportedly detained and tortured thousands of people, killed hundreds of peaceful protestors, and badly injured many more. Men supporting women in the streets are now being targeted with the death penalty.
  • The UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) was established in 1946, and has become instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women. Its 45 members are elected by ECOSOC, based on equitable geographical distribution, and serve for four years.

5. India Successfully Carries Out Trials of Nuclear-Capable ”Agni-5 missile”

  • India has successfully conducted night trials of nuclear-capable ballistic missile Agni V, capable of striking targets at ranges more than 5,000 kilometers with very high degree of accuracy.
  • The missile test firing was conducted from APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast. This was the latest test in the Agni missile series. According to defence sources, the test was carried out to validate new technologies and equipment on the missile that are now lighter than before.
  • The Agni V missile, which uses a three-stage solid-fuelled engine, has been developed by India’s Defence Research and Development organisation (DRDO).
  • The development of Agni missiles started in early 1980 under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme spearheaded by scientist and former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, who was also a central figure in India’s missile and space programmes.

6. India received Rafale’s 36th and last aircraft from France

  • All 36 Rafale aircraft were delivered to India by France. India and France struck an intergovernmental agreement wherein Paris committed to pay India 60,000 crore rupees for 36 Rafale fighter jets in 2016.
  • The Rafale is a 4.5 generation jet with long-range air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, as well as cutting-edge radar and electronic warfare capabilities.
  • The aircraft’s serviceability is over 75%, and the French company Dassault Aviation is also involved in its maintenance.
  • At the height of the war with China, the Rafale entered the Indian Air Force quickly and began flying over Ladakh a week after arriving.

  • The 5th edition of Youth Co:Lab, Asia Pacific’s largest youth innovation movement was jointly launched by Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog and UNDP India December 15th 2022.
  • Youth Co:Lab is an initiative launched in 2019 by UNDP India in partnership with Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog and aims to establish a common agenda for Asia-Pacific countries to invest in and empower youth to accelerate implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through leadership, social innovation, and entrepreneurship.

8. Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kaam Karyakram (PMKKK) Renamed as Promotion of Prime Minister’s Heritage (PM Vikas) Scheme

  • The Minister of Minority Affairs, Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani in a reply to a question in the Lok Sabha informed that the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Ko Kaam Karyakram (PMKKK) has now been named as Pradhan Mantri Virasat Ka Samvardhan (PM VIKAS) Scheme.
  • The integrated scheme converges five erstwhile schemes of the Ministry viz. Seekho aur Kamao, USTTAD, Hamari Dharohar, Nai Roshni and Nai Manzil. The scheme has been approved by the Cabinet for the period of 15th Finance Commission.

10. Tata Steel Officially Partnered FIH Men’s World Cup 2023

  • Tata Steel Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hockey India on December 13, 2022 to become an Official Partner of the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 Bhubaneswar – Rourkela.
  • The FIH Men’s World Cup is the 15th edition of the prestigious event, the top tournament for men along with the Olympics, and will take place in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela from January 13 to January 29, 2023.

  • The FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup will be the fourth time that India will be hosting the prestigious tournament after organising it in 1982 in Bombay, 2010 in New Delhi, and 2018 in Bhubaneswar. A total of 16 nations will take part in the upcoming tournament.

  • The FIH Men’s World Cup is the pinnacle of men’s hockey tournaments. The 15th edition of the esteemedevent will take place in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela from January 13 to January 29, 2023.

11. Cindy Hook named as CEO of 2032 Olympic organising committee

  • The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games organising committee has named American executive Cindy Hook as its first CEO. After speaking with 50 candidates over a six-month period, the organising committee made the announcement of the appointment.
  • Hook previously worked for the international professional services network in the U.S. and in Australia, moving to Sydney in 2009 to lead the auditing practice for six years before later becoming CEO of the Australian operation in 2015.
  • Hook was based in Singapore as CEO of Deloitte Asia Pacific until June.
  • In July of last year, Brisbane was chosen as the host city for the 2032 Olympic Games as part of a revised selection process that saw a small group of IOC members nominate and suggest host locations to the board.
  • The Summer Olympics were twice held in Australia, in Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.
  • The organizing group for 2032 conducted its first board meeting in April and the countdown to the decade-long event began on July 23.

13. Gamosa, Tandur Redgram, and Ladakh apricots get GI tags from Assam

GI tags from Assam:

  • The Assam Gamosa, the Telangana Tandur Redgram, and a Ladakh apricot variety are just a few of the items that have received the Geographical Indications (GI) label from the government. The overall number of GI has reached 432.
  • Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala are the top five states with the greatest number of GIs.
  • The government approved spending of Rs 75 crore for three years for GI promotion at awareness programmes, supporting the promotion of GIs.
  • A GI is primarily a produced product (handicrafts and industrial goods), an agricultural product, or a natural product that comes from a specific geographic region. Such a name typically carries a guarantee of quality and originality, which is mostly attributed to the location of its origin.
