Centre Proposes Unified Broadcasting Rules for TV and Radio Services
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting released draft Telecommunications (TV, Radio and Associated Services) Rules, 2026, under the Telecommunications Act, 2023, to unify broadcasting regulations. TV channels must air 30 minutes of public-interest content daily, while FM radio stations must broadcast one hour of socially relevant content covering education, health, agriculture, and environment. Private FM stations cannot air independent news but may broadcast Akashvani bulletins and approved updates. The draft replaces outdated colonial-era laws to simplify governance and improve ease of doing business. Stakeholders can submit feedback until 27 July 2026, aiming for a modern, structured, and public-service-focused broadcasting framework.
