Dams of  Eastern States of India

Important Dams in Odisha

1. Hirakud Dam- Hirakud Dam is the longest major earthen dam in Asia, built across the Mahanadi River in Sambalpur district. 
2. Jalaput Dam- Jalaput hydroelectric dam is built on the Machkund River at the borderline between Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. 
3. Mandira Dam- Mandira Dam is built across the Sankha River near Kansbahal in Sundergarh district, located at a distance of about 25 kilometers from Rourkela. 
4. Patora Dam- Patora dam is constructed across Jonk River and one of the famous location in Nuapada district along with nearby places Nrusinghanath Temple, Harishankar Temple and Bull Yogeswar temple.
5. Rengali Dam- Rengali dam is constructed across Brahmani River and power station is situated near the village of Rengali of Talcher in Angul district. This multi-purpose dam has the second largest reservoir in Odisha and the project was built for irrigation, power, barrage and canal system.
Important Dams in West Bengal
1. Durgapur Barrage- Durgapur Barrage is across the Damodar River at Bankura in Bankura district.
2. Farakka Barrage- Farakka Barrage Project with headquarters at Farakka in Murshidabad district of West Bengal is a subordinate office under the Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation. The Farakka Barrage Project Authority was set up in 1961.
3. Mukutmanipur Dam- The Mukutmanipur Dam is a dam in Khatra subdivision of Bankura district. It is located at the confluence of the Kangsabati and Kumari rivers close to the Jharkhand border.
Important Dams in Bihar
1. Indrapuri Barrage- Indrapuri Barrage is across the Son River in Rohtas district in the Indian state of Bihar.
2. Kosi embankment- The Kosi embankments were built in the late 1950s to retain the Kosi River which is a transboundary river between Nepal and India.
Important Dams in Jharkhand
1. Getalsud Dam- Getalsud Dam is an artificial reservoir situated in Ormanjhi, Ranchi, Jharkhand. It was constructed across the Subarnarekha River and was opened in 1971.
2. Chandil Dam- Chandil is a census town in Seraikela Kharsawan district. It has been constructed on the river Subernarekha.
3. Konar Dam- Konar dam is the second of the four multi-purpose dams included in the first phase of the Damodar Valley Corporation. It was constructed across the Konar River.
4. Tilaiya Dam- Tilaiya Dam was the first of the four multi-purpose dams included in the first phase of the Damodar Valley Corporation. It was constructed across the Barakar River, at Tilaiya in Koderma district in the Indian state of Jharkhand and opened in 1953.
