Guru Nanak Gurpurab or Guru Nanak Jayanti signifies the birth of Guru Nanak Ji who was the first Sikh Guru to lay the foundation of Sikhism. It is the most pious day in Sikhism and is celebrated across India and the world.  The word Gurpurab originated from two words Gur, which means the Guru or the master, and Purab, that comes from the Hindi word Parv that means day, so it is ‘the day associated with the gurus’.

Guru Nanak was born in Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi in the present Pakistan on April 15, 1469, and the place is now called the Nankana Sahib. The date of the festival changes from year to year, according to the Indian lunar calendar. This year will mark the 548th birthday of Guru Nanak and is thus Guru Nanak Jayanti.
In Sikhism, the celebrations during Guru Nanak Jayanti are centered around the birth anniversaries of the 10 gurus. Guru Gobind Singh was the tenth and the last Sikh Guru. After him, Adi Granth or Guru Granth Sahib is considered as the Guru which has the writings of the gurus in it.
The celebration begins as early as 4 am with Prabhat Pheris, the morning procession on Guru Nanak Jayanti. The procession which starts from Gurudwaras that are decorated with lights and flowers. This is followed by a special community lunch called as the Langar. People irrespective of class, caste or creed can attend langar. The celebrations end with singing Gurbani at about 2 am. Grand celebrations can be seen in Chandigarh, Haryana, and Punjab.
