PM, President and MPs to take 30% Salary Cut, MPLAD funds suspended for 2 years

Coronavirus Updates- The Union Cabinet today (on 6th April) has approved an ordinance cutting the pension and allowances of the members of the Parliament by 30% for 1 year to contribute the ammount towards the fight against the deadly coronavirus outbreak in India. COVID-19 has already claimed 122 lives in the nation till date, and more than 4375 people have been reported positive for coronavirus so far. The MPLAD (Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme) Fund during 2020-21 & 2021-22 has also been suspended. Union Minister Prakash Javadekar, said “The money will go to the Consolidated Fund of India.”

The cabinet held a video conference and decided to apply reduction in the allowances, pensions of MP, and the Prime Minister, President, Vice President, and Governors have decided to take a pay cut.

What is MPLAD Fund?

MPLAD stands for The Members of Parliament Local Area Development. The division is entrusted with the responsibility of implementation of Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS). Under the scheme, each MP has the choice to suggest to the District Collector for works to the tune of Rs.5 Crores per annum to be taken up in his/her constituency.
