As per the latest guidelines (notified in the information handout), each candidate must score the minimum qualifying marks in all sections of the Objective Paper, namely Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, Data Analysis & Interpretation, General/ Economy/ Banking Awareness, and English Language. This requirement also extends to the Descriptive Paper, which tests candidates on written communication through tasks like Emails, Situational Analysis and Report/Precis Writing.
Sectional Cut-Offs Introduced in SBI PO Mains 2025
The introduction of sectional cut-offs in SBI PO Mains 2025 marks a pivotal change in how aspirants must approach the exam. With the exam date set for 05 May 2025 and the admit cards already released, there’s no room for selective preparation.
This means that even if a candidate performs exceptionally well overall but fails to clear the cut-off in one section, they will not qualify for the next stage. Hence, balanced preparation across all sections is now more important than ever.

Factors for the Sectional Cut-Offs
The sectional cut-offs will be decided by the Bank based on several factors, including the number of vacancies, the difficulty level of the exam, and the overall performance of candidates. These cut-offs are not predefined but are formulated post-exam, making it crucial for aspirants to aim high in every individual test area.
Impact on Phase III Selection Criteria
The selection for SBI PO Phase-III (Interview and Group Exercises) will be made from candidates who rank high on the category-wise merit list based on aggregate scores in the Mains (Phase-II). However, only those who clear each sectional cut-off and the overall qualifying score will be considered. As per the official update, up to three times the number of vacancies (approximately) will be shortlisted from the top scorers in each category for the final phase.
How Aspirants Should Prepare Now for SBI PO Mains
With this game-changing update, candidates must shift their focus from just maximising their overall score to ensuring consistent performance across all sections. Ignoring even one section could be the difference between qualifying and getting disqualified. Practising full-length mock tests, sectional quizzes, and timed practice is now essential. Moreover, the Descriptive Paper should not be left for last-minute preparation, as it carries equal weight in qualification.
