Remembering the Past: The Journey Of The 19th Amendment

The struggle and the story of Women’s Equality Day started much earlier, at the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848, where leaders like Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton first gathered to demand equal rights for women. Over the years, women across the country gained awareness and organised marches, signed petitions and gave speeches. Their continuous efforts finally paid off in 1920, when the 19th Amendment was certified, giving women in the U.S. the right to vote.

Later in 1971, after the Women’s Strike for Equality, Congresswoman Bella Abzug proposed that August 26 be celebrated every year as Women’s Equality Day. By 1973, Congress officially recognised it, and since then, every U.S. president has issued a proclamation honouring this important day.
