22nd December – National Mathematics Day 2021

22nd December is observed and celebrated as the National Mathematics Day to mark the birth anniversary of famous mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. This day was declared as the National Mathematics day by the former Prime minister, Manmohan Singh in 2012. This year India will celebrate the 134th Birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, in the honor of the great man.

History of National Mathematics Day

The day was first observed and marked as the national mathematics day in the year 2012 by our former prime minister Mr. Manmohan Singh. The day was announced as the national mathematics day by paying the tribute to Ramanujan in Chennai. Ramanujan died at the young age of 32 because of deteriorating health on April 26, 1920.

Facts about Ramanujan Srinivasa

Ramanujan was born on December 22, 1887, in Tamil Nadu’s Erode. He had enrolled himself in Madras’ Pachaiyappa College at the age of 14. He was one of the prestigious Indian Mathematicians who has mastered trigonometry at age of 12 and made great contributions to mathematical concepts such as number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions.

As per the government data, Ramanujan discovered his own theorems and compiled around 3900 results independently. The movie released in 2015 named “The Man who knew infinity” was based on the biography of Ramanujan which describes the life of mathematicians and the journey towards establishing the famed mathematical theories.
