The Reserve Bank of India has cancelled the licence of Karnataka-based Shree Mahalaxmi Urban Co-operative Credit Bank due to its weak financial condition, inadequate capital, and inability to repay depositors fully.
Following the cancellation, the bank has been barred from conducting banking operations, while the Registrar of Co-operative Societies has been directed to begin winding-up proceedings.
To protect customers, the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) will provide insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per depositor. Nearly 98% of depositors are expected to receive their entire insured deposits, ensuring protection of public interest and financial stability.
