International Development Week (IDW) is an annual event celebrated internationally which is promoted by Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). In 2026, IDW will be observed from February 1st to 7th February. This is a week long celebration to highlight the Canada’s contribution to global development efforts. The main aim is to inspire the action towards achieving global sustainability by bringing in all the government agencies, non governmental organization (NGOs), educational institutions and general public to raise awareness.
History of International Development Week
The IDW has a significant history which creates an impact in the Canadian Society. Read below the origin of the IDW:
Origins and Establishment
International Development Week was established by Canadian International Development Agency in 1990. The agency was established in 1968 to manage Canada’s official development assistance program. The primary focus is to provide bilateral aid to developing countries with a particular emphasis on 20 countries of focus. The country selection has different criteria.
First official IDW took place in 1998 marking the beginning of an annual tradition. It is a platform which explores various dimensions of qualitative development including poverty reduction, gender equality, education, health etc.

International Development Week 2026: Theme
Every year there’s a theme set to bring up the community societies together to promote every global challenge to be resolved together. This year’s theme is:
Prosperity through Partnership
Every single year, Global Affairs Canada selects a specific theme for the International Theme Week that aligns the vision of United Nation’s Sustainable Development which is not considered as the official theme of IDW but for a specific year only. It reflects the issue Canada wants to address which also is a global challenge such as poverty, inequality.
Sub-Themes for IDW 2026
This year IDW 2026 would focus on 5 main sub theme that compliments the main theme of the event. Following are sub themes:
