Ayushman Bharat Yojana Benefits

As we celebrate the Ayushman Bharat Diwas 2025, it is important for individuals to learn about the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, aimed at improving healthcare access and reducing the financial burden on vulnerable populations. Below are the key advantages of this transformative scheme:

  • Coverage of ₹5 Lakh Per Family: The Ayushman Bharat Yojana provides free health insurance worth ₹5 lakh per family every year. This coverage is available for hospital treatments, surgeries, and other medical expenses at both public and private hospitals across the country.
  • Coverage of All Families in the SECC Database: Ayushman Bharat Yojana ensures that all families identified in the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) of 2011 are covered under the scheme. This includes poor and vulnerable families, ensuring no one is left behind.
  • Cashless Service: The scheme ensures cashless access to medical services. Beneficiaries can get treatment without worrying about the medical charges, making the process more efficient and accessible.
  • Coverage for Pre-Existing Diseases: PM-JAY covers pre-existing diseases from the very first day of enrollment, allowing people with ongoing health conditions to get treated without any waiting period.
  • Comprehensive Medical Treatment: The scheme offers extensive coverage, including around 1,949 medical procedures. It includes essential treatments, surgeries, diagnostics, and hospitalisation costs, reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses.
  • Pre and Post-Hospitalisation Costs: Not only does the scheme cover hospitalisation expenses, but it also takes care of costs before and after treatment. It covers up to 3 days of pre-hospitalisation and 15 days of post-hospitalisation expenses.
  • No Limits on Family Size, Age or Gender: There are no restrictions on the number of family members, their age, or gender. Every eligible family member, regardless of age, can benefit from the scheme.
  • Special Coverage for Senior Citizens: The Union Cabinet approved a major expansion of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) on September 11, 2024. Under this decision, all senior citizens aged 70 and above will receive health coverage, regardless of their income, benefiting around 4.5 crore families, including 6 crore senior citizens, by providing them with free health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family.

Ayushman Bharat Diwas History

The Ayushman Bharat Yojana was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 23, 2018, in Ranchi, Jharkhand. This initiative marked a crucial step toward realising Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in India.

Introduced as part of the National Health Policy 2017, the scheme aims to provide accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare to all citizens. PM-JAY was specifically designed to address the healthcare challenges faced by vulnerable populations, ensuring timely medical treatment.

Before the launch of Ayushman Bharat, the Indian government had rolled out health initiatives like the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) in 2008. However, these programs had certain limitations regarding their scope and coverage. Ayushman Bharat sought to overcome these challenges by offering a more comprehensive health coverage plan, incorporating hospital empanelment, digital health records, and cashless treatment for beneficiaries.
