World Intellectual Property Day 2023

World Intellectual Property Day 2023 is on 26 April as an initiative of  World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)  . It is a day for recognition of intellectual property in promoting science and arts. It also serves as a day to connect with people across the globe and spread awareness about Intellectual Property Rights. Traditional knowledge and indigenous knowledge need special emphasis to ensure protection and the right appropriation of benefits. World Intellectual Property Day 2023: Theme

The theme for World Intellectual Property Day 2023 is “Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity”.  The theme celebrates the spirit of women inventors, creators, and entrepreneurs worldwide, who have made remarkable contributions through their groundbreaking work.

With women constituting nearly half of the global population (49.58%), they represent a vast pool of talent that remains largely untapped.

World Intellectual Property Day 2023: History

The idea of instituting a World Intellectual Property Day was proposed by the Director General of the National Algerian Institute for Industrial Property (INAPI) during the 33rd Session of the Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO in September 1988.

In October 1999, at its 26th session, the General Assembly of WIPO approved the concept of World Intellectual Property Day. Since 2000 April 26 is celebrated as World Intellectual Property Day.
