The day is celebrated as an initiative of the United Nations and countries across the globe to come together to recognize the importance of water in human lives. World Water Day 2023 History

World Water Day was first celebrated on 22 March 1993. This year i.e World Water Day marks 50 years of celebration of World Water Day. The day was first celebrated in 1993 after it was approved by United Nations General Assembly in 1992. United Nations aims at spreading awareness and calls for action to prevent and halt the ongoing water crisis.

World Water Day also aims at highlighting the issues related to sanitation. Globally the sanitation problem is also intricately linked to water issues.  The nature of water and sanitation is such that – clean water is essential for sanitation and sanitation ensures clean water bodies and uncontaminated water.

World Water Day 2023 Theme

The theme for World Water Day is released by United Nations. All the participating countries and other bodies are expected to hold events and spread the event to all the corners. The theme for World Water Day 2023 is “Accelerating the change to solve the water and sanitation crisis.”

The theme not only calls global leaders and businessmen for accelerating change but recognizes we as common citizens as change makes. It is believed if all of us change the way we consume water and ensure sustainability and minimal environmental impact the water crisis can be averted to a great extent.  The theme for World Water Day calls for collective action from individuals at the community, society, and national levels.

World Water Day provides an opportunity to focus on finding solutions to these challenges through international cooperation and innovative approaches to water management.

When the Wolrd comes together on this day World Water Day 2023, it is important that we are aware of the largest water crisis, that the world faces in 2023. There are few regions in India where a few drops of water are a luxury and stories from these regions can highlight that water means life. It is also important to remember that as per IPCC and other reports anthropogenic climate change is the reason behind the water crisis.

  • Water Crisis in the Horn Of Africa: As per reports at least 36.1 million people have now been affected by one of the most severe and longest droughts in recent history that is expected to continue well into 2023.
