Indian Navy Day 2019

Navy Day in India is observed on 4th December since 1971 to celebrate the achievements and role of Naval Force of our nation. The Indian Navy is the marine branch of the Indian Armed Forces and the President of India is its Commander-in-Chief. Chhatrapati Shivaji Bhosle, Maratha emperor, is considered as ‘Father of the Indian Navy’.

Background

December 4 is chosen as the Navy Day of India due to its greater significance. India celebrates Navy Day in commemoration of Operation Trident, the attack launched by the Indian Navy on Karachi harbour during 1971’s Indo-Pakistan war. Anti-Ship Missile was used in the operation for the first time.

The operation was conducted on the night of December 4-5 and it inflicted heavy damage on Pakistani vessels. Indian Navy sank four Pakistani vessels and ravaged Karachi harbour fuel fields in Pakistan. India did not suffer any loss during the operation. INS Nipat, INS Nirghat and INS Veer, Indian Navy’s three warships played a crucial role in the attack.

The Indian Navy fleet sailed from Okha Port of Gujarat towards Pakistani waters to attack the Karachi port. They sailed 70 miles south of Karachi at night and fired Pakistani vessel PNS Khaibar.

Many Indian Navy personnel who were part of the successful operation were honoured with gallantry awards.

Objective

The main objective of Navy day is to honour the strength our Navy in Operation Trident. Navy Day is also celebrated each year to work towards securing marine borders and bolstering relationships with other countries through joint exercises, humanitarian missions and relief operations. On the day, those killed in the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 are also remembered.

Theme of Navy Day 2019

The Theme of Indian Navy Day 2019 is “Silent, Strong and Swift”. Thus, showing the silent strength of our warriors. The Theme for Indian Navy Day 2018 was “Indian Navy, Mission-deployed and Combat-ready”.

Celebration of Navy Day 

December 4, Navy Day is celebrated through joint exercises, humanitarian missions and relief operations. The Navy also organise a Beating Retreat ceremony at Gateway of India in Mumbai on the eve of the Navy Day. The Indian Naval Band performs across places between Gateway of India and Radio Club in Mumbai. The Indian Navy warships and aircraft are open to visitors, especially school children.
