DoSJE and UNDP Join Hands for Waste-Picker Support

On 1 May 2025 (Labor Day), the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment (DoSJE) signed an agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The main goal of this agreement is to give waste-pickers better access to finance and modern technologies. It also aims to create a safe and sustainable working environment for them.

Key Highlights of the Agreement
This partnership also includes support for establishing Project Management Units (PMUs) in various states under the NAMASTE scheme. The NAMASTE scheme is already working towards formally including waste-pickers into India’s workforce.

Since the financial year 2023–24, waste-pickers have been officially added as a part of the NAMASTE scheme. The plan is to identify and include 2.5 lakh waste-pickers across the country through digital registration.

  • Digital profiling and registration of waste-pickers

  • Capital subsidies to help them buy waste collection vehicles
  • Encouraging the formation of collectives that can manage Decentralized Waste Collection Centers (DWCCs)

GAME and NITI Aayog Team Up for Entrepreneurship Growth

Another major agreement in 2025 is between Global Alliance for Mass Entrepreneurship (GAME) and NITI Aayog. This partnership aims to build healthy and strong entrepreneurship ecosystems in different parts of the country.

This collaboration plans to begin with pilot projects in Nagpur, Visakhapatnam and Uttar Pradesh. It will support local entrepreneurs by:
