1. Egypt’s President invited as chief guest for Republic Day 2023

  • India has invited Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as the chief guest for the Republic Day in 2023, reflecting New Delhi’s continuing focus on the Arab world as it prepares for a year of high-profile diplomatic engagements.
  • The formal invitation was handed over when external affairs minister S Jaishankar met Sisi in Cairo on October 16 during an official visit to Egypt, the people said. Egypt is among the nine guest countries invited to the G20 Summit under India’s presidency in 2023.

2. India’s 1st Integrated Rocket Facility to be Based in Telangana

3. US Bans the Use of Chinese Companies Huawei, ZTE Telecom Equipment Sales

  • The Biden administration has banned approvals of new telecommunications equipment from China’s Huawei Technologies and ZTE because they pose “an unacceptable risk” to U.S. national security.
  • The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said, it had adopted the final rules, which also bar the sale or import of equipment made by China’s surveillance equipment maker Dahua Technology, video surveillance firm Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology and telecoms firm Hytera Communications Corp.
  • The five-member FCC said, it had voted unanimously to adopt new rules that will block the importation or sale of the targeted products.

4. China Holds First China-Indian Ocean Region Forum Without India

  • China organized the first high-level China-Indian Ocean Region Forum on Development Cooperation, with 19 countries from the region except for India. The event was quietly held along with many other events including the 6th China-South Asia expo, and the China-Indian Ocean region thinktank forum in a hybrid format in Kunming, showcasing China’s continuing quest for a larger presence and role in the strategically important Indian Ocean.

  • Union Health Ministry designated Padma Shri, Khel Ratna Arjuna Awardee and the President of the Paralympic Committee of India, Dr. Deepa Malik as Nikshay Mitra ambassador in New Delhi. It is an initiative under Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan.
  • Deepa Malik expressed her commitment to the TB Mukt Bharat (TB-free India) campaign, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2018, when she participated in TB awareness activities at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Pavilion at the 41st India International Trade Fair at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
  • Deepa highlighted that “health is the ultimate wealth”, urging participation in the movement, contributing to building momentum to ensure India becomes free of TB by 2025.

6. Small is good: Mudra loan NPAs at just 3.3% in 7 years

  • Over seven years since launch, borrowers of Mudra loans – essentially micro and small enterprises – have paid their EMIs (equated monthly instalments) to banks.
  • Non-performing assets of banks for Mudra loans – including those extended during the Covid-19 pandemic when small enterprises were the worst hit – are lower than the average NPAs of the sector as a whole, data obtained under the Right to Information Act reveals.
  • Nearly ₹5,000 crore of loans or 16.32 per cent of the total bank assets in Maharashtra under the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana to help small businesses are unpaid as of June 2022, as per official data.
  • Parbhani district in the backward Marathwada region of Maharashtra has the highest non-performing assets (NPAs) at 60.54 per cent.
  • As per the data, ₹30,019 crore was taken as loan under the MUDRA scheme as of June 2022 by more than 52 lakh borrowers in Maharashtra. Out of this, ₹4,898 crore taken by 6.19 lakh borrowers has been classified as NPAs.
  • As far as Mudra loan is concerned, out of the total outstanding of Rs 6,204 crore as on March, Rs 695.50 crore was NPA, which is 11.24 per cent of the total outstanding loan in Hariyana. The NPA of the public sector banks was over 18.63 per cent, followed by Sarv Haryana Gramin Bank (10.84 per cent) and private sector banks (3.55 per cent).

7. Third Ship of Survey Vessel ‘Ikshak’ Launched by Indian Navy

  • ‘Ikshak’ is the third of the four Survey Vessels (Large SVL) Project, being built by GRSE/L&T for the Indian Navy was launched on 26th November 2022 at Kattupalli, Chennai.
  • Ikshak made her first contact with the water of the Bay of Bengal at 1040 hours. The launch ceremony was felicitated by VAdm MA Hampiholi, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Southern Naval Command.

8. 14th Edition Of Aero India 2023 to be Held From 13-17 February 2023 in Bengaluru

9. India, Australia wargames “Austra Hind 22” begins

  • The bilateral training exercise “AUSTRA HIND 22” between contingents of the Indian Army and the Australian Army begins at Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan. The exercise will continue till 11th of December.
  • This is the first exercise in the series of AUSTRA HIND with participation of all arms and services contingent from both armies. During the exercise, participants will engage in a variety of tasks ranging from joint planning, joint tactical drills, sharing basics of special arms skills and raiding a hostile target.
  • The joint exercise, besides promoting understanding and interoperability between the two armies, will further help in strengthening ties between India and Australia.

12. EGramSwaraj and Ministry of Panchayati Raj Wins Gold Award Under the National Awards for e-Governance

20. Tamil Nadu govt declared Arittapatti village in Madurai as a biodiversity heritage site

  • The Tamil Nadu Government, issued a notification declaring Arittapatti and Meenakshipuram villages in Madurai district the first biodiversity heritage site in the State.
  • The site comprising 139.63 hectares in Arittapatti village (Melur block) and 53.8 hectares in Meenakshipuram village (Madurai East taluk) will be known as the Arittapatti Biodiversity Heritage site.
  • Arittapatti village, known for its ecological and historical significance, houses around 250 species of birds including three important raptors – birds of prey, namely the Laggar Falcon, the Shaheen Falcon and Bonelli’s Eagle. It is also home to wildlife such as the Indian Pangolin, Slender Loris and pythons

  • The Anaikondan tank, built during the reign of Pandiyan kings in the 16th century is one among them.
