The story behind this auspicious day is very interesting.

There is a famous folklore of Goddess Durga connected to Durga Ashtami. There was a demon named Mahishasur who destructed our Mother Earth. He dedicated his time to rigorous penance directed the creator of all creatures, Lord Brahma. He was completely in pride of his power and never thought of utilizing that power in a positive direction but was trying to spread misconducts. To end all this activity, Goddess Durga decided to pick up the weapon. She decided to teach him and the entire world a lesson. Goddess fought ferrocious battle with demon for nine days which seemed to be unending. Deciding to end the battle there, the Goddess then summoned her to discuss (given to her by Vishnu), that was a clone of the Sudarsana-Chakra. She launched it at Mahishasura and beheaded him. Thus, the terrible buffalo-demon, who had terrorized the Gods with boons obtained from Lord Brahma, met his end at the hands of Durga. This story gave the world a lesson of ending attrocities with consistent fight. In life and journey of your preparation, you can fight your laziness and devil with hard work and dedication.
