The Indian Air Force had six RAF-trained officers and 19 air men when it was officially established. They had four Westland Wapiti IIA army cooperation biplanes in their inventory. After 1941, the force needed a training framework in India, therefore RAF (Royal Air Force) flying instructors were posted to flying clubs to train volunteers and interested citizens. Seven clubs in British India and two in other princely states provided training. All of these steps were taken after the Chatfield Committee evaluated India’s defense challenges in 1939.
