Directions (1-10): Read the following passage and answer the questions following it. Several alphabets are given to help u assist in answering those questions.

Plastics are now widely present in the environment, as visible (A) along coastlines, in lakes and rivers, and even in the soil. (B)The recent finding that microplastic particles are found even in ‘safe’ bottled water indicates the magnitude of the crisis. (C) There is (1) overwhelmed doubt that the global (2) production of plastics, at over 300 million tonnes a year according to the UN Environment Programme, has (3) little the capacity of governments to handle what is (4) thrown away as waste. (D)Microplastics are particles of less than 5 mm that enter the environment either as primary industrial products, ________________________________, or via urban waste water and broken-down elements of articles discarded by consumers. Washing of clothes releases (E) microfibres into water bodies and the sea. The health impact of the presence of polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate and other chemicals in drinking water, food and even inhaled air may not yet be clear, but (F) inadvertently these are contaminants. Research evidence from complementary fields indicates that accumulation of these chemicals can induce or aggravate immune responses in the body.___________________________ (G) _______________________________. It is heartening that the WHO has come forward to commission a review of the health impact of plastics in water. Last December in Nairobi, UN member-countries resolved to produce a binding agreement in 18 months to deal with the release of plastics into the marine environment. The problem is staggering: eight million tonnes of waste, including bottles and packaging, make their way into the sea each year. There is now even the Great Pacific Garbage Patch of plastic debris. (H) India has a major (1) wetlands dealing with plastics, (2) particularly single-use shopping bags that reach (3) dumping sites, rivers and (4) problem along with other waste. The most efficient way to deal with the pollution is to control the production and distribution of plastics. Banning single-use bags and making consumers pay a significant amount for the more durable ones is a feasible solution. (I) Enforcing the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, which require segregation of waste from April 8 this year, will retrieve materials and greatly reduce the burden on the environment. Waste separation can be achieved in partnership with the community, and presents a major employment opportunity. The goal, however, has to be long term. As the European Union’s vision 2030 document on creating a circular plastic economy explains, the answer lies in changing the very nature of plastics, from cheap and disposable to durable, reusable and fully recyclable. There is (J) that this is the way forward. Now that the presence of plastics in drinking water, including the bottled variety, has been documented, governments should realise it cannot be business as usual.

Q1. Which of the following words given in the options should come at the place marked as (A) in the above passage to make it grammatically correct and contextually meaningful. Also, the word should fill in the two sentences given below to make them contextually correct and meaningful.
(i)Workmen were clearing the roads of the ______from shattered buildings
(ii)A stable arrangement of planets, comets, and ________orbiting the sun

Dexter
Denture
Debris
Daunted
Deluge
Solution:
Debris- scattered pieces of rubbish or remains.
Deluge- a severe flood.
Dexter- on or towards the right-hand side (in a coat of arms, from the bearer's point of view, i.e. the left as it is depicted).
Among the given options, the option (c) ‘debris’ is the most appropriate word to fill the blank. Hence, the option (c) is the correct answer.
Q2. In the above passage, a sentence B is given in Italics. There may or may not be an error in one part of the sentence. Choose the part which has an error in it as your answer. If there is no error, then choose option (c) as your answer.
The recent finding that
microplastic particles are found
no error
indicates the magnitude of the crisis.
even in ‘safe’ bottle water
Solution:
There is no error in the question.
Q3. The sentence given in (C) has four words given in bold. Amongst the given bold words which of the followings must interchange to make the sentence grammatically and contextually correct and meaningful?
1-3
2-4
1-4
2-3
3-4
Solution:
Phrase ‘has little the capacity of governments’ doesn’t make any sense and ‘has overwhelmed the capacity of governments’ is pretty much correct. The positions of the words marked with (2) and (4) are correct. Upon interchanging 1-3, we get a sentence which is grammatically and contextually meaningful and correct as “There is little doubt that the global production of plastics, at over 300 million tonnes a year according to the UN Environment Programme, has overwhelmed the capacity of governments to handle what is thrown away as waste.”
Hence, the option (a) is the correct answer.
Q4. Which of the following phrases should fill the blank (D) to make it contextually and grammatically meaningful and correct respectively?
the collection drive will be awarded certificates and trophies.
Bisleri’s waste pickers and NGO partners and converted to recycled polyester
such as those used in scrubbers and cosmetics
that plastic bag manufacturing activity is illegally being carried out at
None of these
Solution:
The hint for the answer can be derived from the line of the paragraph where it is given as “or via urban waste water and broken-down elements of articles discarded by consumers.” It is signifying what are the sources from where Microplastic particles of less than 5 mm enter into the environment.
Hence, the option (c) is the correct answer.
Q5. Which of the following words given in the options should come at the place marked as ‘E’ in the above paragraph to make it grammatically and contextually meaningful and correct. Also, the word should fill the two sentences given below to make them contextually correct and meaningful?
(i) Lotze's logic then, is formal in a sense in which a logic which does not find the conception of ______ truth embarrassing is not so.
(ii) The vegetable product - which is extremely expensive - must be prescribed or the ___________ product guaranteed "physiologically pure," i.e.
synthetic
relegated
semantic
published
vanished
Solution:
Synthetic- (of a substance) made by chemical synthesis, especially to imitate a natural product
Semantic- relating to meaning in language or logic.
Among the given options, the word ‘synthetic’ gels well with the theme of the paragraph and also makes the sentence grammatically and contextually correct and meaningful respectively.
Hence, the option (a) is the correct answer.
Q6. A word is given in bold in F. Choose the word which should replace the word given in bold to make the sentence correct and meaningful. If no change is required, choose option (e) as your answer.
doubtful
dubious

The given sentence here is trying to convey that the, health impact of the presence chemicals in drinking water, food and even inhaled air may not yet be clear, but undoubtedly these are contaminants.
Dubious- of questionable value
The other given options (a) and (d) are the synonyms of the word ‘dubious’
Inadvertently- without intention; accidentally.
Hence, the option (c) is the correct answer.
Q7. Two sentences are given in italics on both sides of G. Which of the following statements can come in between the two sentences in place of G so as to maintain the continuity of the paragraph?
The pledge also states that plastic is harmful to the environment, and urges students to carry cloth bags and never burn plastic.

More studies, as a globally coordinated effort, are necessary to assess the impact on health.
Solution:
Among the given options, only option (e) gels well with the preceding and the following sentences of (G). The rests seem out-of-context. Option (a) is talking about some pledge to avoid plastic.
Option (b) has talked about the adverse effects of plastic on marine life.
Hence, the option (e) is the correct answer.
Q8. The sentence given in H has four words given in bold. Amongst given bolded words, which of the followings must replace each other to make the sentence contextually correct and meaningful.
2-4
2-3
1-4
3-4

Directions (11-15): In the questions given below few sentences are given which are grammatically correct and meaningful. Connect them by the word given above the statements in the best possible way without changing the intended meaning. Choose your answer accordingly from the options to form a correct, coherent sentence.

Q11. TILL

(A) The Supreme Court had earlier this month extended the deadline for linking of various services with Aadhaar.
(B) Aadhaar number holders can view the details of Aadhaar Authentication they have done.
(C) The new deadline will be announced once the Supreme Court delivers its judgment on a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the biometrical identification scheme.
(D) This will enable service providers and Aadhaar number holders to verify if the Aadhaar number is valid and is not deactivated.
Only A-D
Only A-C
Only A-B
Both A-B and C-D
None of these
Solution:
Statements (A) and (C) can be joined together using the phrase “till”. The two words until and till mean exactly the same. They are both a preposition and a conjunction. Until is often shorted to “till” and the choice of one or the other is on formality vs. informality in writing as well as on harmonics in the speech. Both the sentences are in the similar context and therefore, the statement thus formed is “The Supreme Court had earlier this month extended the deadline for linking of various services with Aadhaar till it delivers its judgment on a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the biometrical identification scheme.” Hence, option (b) is the most viable answer choice.
Q12. PROVIDED THAT
(A) It is your responsibility to ensure that the builder understands and complies with all the bank’s conditions of the loan.
(B) You can apply for progress payments at any stage during the construction process.
(C) Progress payments are made only if sufficient work has been completed and the bank is satisfied with the progress.
(D) A maximum of six progress payments are often allowed, based on the work completed.
Only A-D
Only A-C
Only B-C
Both A-B and C-D
None of these
Solution:
Statements (B) and (C) can be joined together using the phrase “Provided that”. ‘Provided that’ is the one that's more often used as a conjunction. It means that one thing happening is dependent on another thing happening. Both the sentences are in the similar context and sentence (B) is dependent on the condition given in statement (C). Therefore, the statement thus formed is “You can apply for progress payments at any stage during the construction process provided that sufficient work has been completed and the bank is satisfied with the progress.” Hence, option (c) is the most viable answer choice.

Q13. IN ORDER TO
(A) Fluent conversations can be enjoyed with the knowledge of idioms and phrases.
(B) English sound more eloquent, through idiomatic expressions, popular phrases and proverbs.
(C) Eloquent designs the technology to let computers participate in those conversations.
(D) Gaining familiarity with several idioms and phrases helps you to carry eloquent conversations.
Only A-D
Only A-C
Only B-C
Both A-B and C-D
None of these
Solution:
Statements (A) and (D) can be joined together using the phrase “In order to”. ‘In order to’ expresses the purpose and answer the question why something is done. Both the sentences are in the similar context therefore, sentence (D) [Gaining familiarity with several idioms and phrases] should be done to achieve the objective of sentence (A) [Fluent conversations can be enjoyed]. Hence, the statement thus formed is “In order to become fluent and enjoy conversations, it is important to get familiar with idioms and phrases.” Hence, option (a) is the most viable answer choice.
Q14. NOTWITHSTANDING
(A) The proud claim is Manipur gifted the game of modern Polo to the world,
(B) Manipuri ponies which are central to the game are facing a very precarious situation of possible extinction sooner rather than later.
(C) Most of the Manipuri ponies are kept at home but they are let to roam and graze freely on roads and public places.
(D) There are also many cases of ponies dying from consuming poisonous waste materials disposed of on road sides.
Only A-D
Both A-C and B-C
Only B-C
Only A-B
None of these
Solution:
Statements (A) and (B) can be joined together using the phrase “Notwithstanding”. ‘Notwithstanding’ means although; in spite of the fact that. Both the sentences are in the similar context therefore, the single coherent sentence thus formed is “Notwithstanding the proud claim that Manipur gifted the game of modern Polo to the world, Manipuri ponies which are central to the game are facing a very precarious situation of possible extinction sooner rather than later.” Hence, option (d) is the most viable answer choice.
Q15. WHENEVER
(A) In the name of education, all sorts of slaveries are nourished.
(B) As some Indian officials have indicated, the days of carving out separate ‘spheres of influence’ are over.
(C) As such, it remains a big question how the policy would be translated into action and what would be the fate of Manipur.
(D) Every generation passes on, by way of inheritance, its jealousies, enmities, stupidities to the new generation through the teacher.
Only A-D
Only A-C
Only B-C
Only A-B
None of these
Solution:
