Why Indian Gur Is Becoming a Global Alternative to Refined Sugar
- India produces over 70% of the world’s jaggery (gur), with 20–30% of sugarcane output used for jaggery, supporting nearly 2.5 million rural livelihoods through farming, processing, transport and micro-enterprises.
- India’s jaggery exports surged from USD 197 million (2015-16) to USD 406.8 million (2024-25), with major buyers including Indonesia, USA, UAE, Nigeria and Nepal, reflecting rising global demand.
- Viewed as a healthier alternative to refined sugar, jaggery retains minerals like Iron, Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium, earning recognition as “medicinal sugar” among health-conscious consumers worldwide.
- With roots in the Vedic period, India’s jaggery sector is strengthened through schemes like PMFME, PM Kisan SAMPADA, ODOP, AGMARK and GI tagging, including Kolhapur, Muzaffarnagar and Marayoor Jaggery.

Chola Copper Plates Return to India: History and Significance Explained
- Narendra Modi’s visit to the Netherlands marked a major cultural milestone as the country agreed to return the historic Anaimangalam (Leiden) Copper Plates, priceless 11th-century Chola artefacts that had remained abroad for nearly 300 years.
- The returned collection includes 21 large and 3 small copper plates from the reigns of Rajaraja Chola I and Rajendra Chola I, containing Tamil and Sanskrit inscriptions on governance, land rights, taxation and religious grants.
- These artefacts are considered vital historical records of the Chola Empire, showcasing medieval India’s administrative systems, Tamil heritage, diplomacy and cultural influence across Southeast Asia through trade and naval expansion.
- India’s effort to recover the plates began in 2012 and gained momentum after raising the issue before UNESCO’s ICPRCP committee in 2023, leading to successful negotiations with Dutch authorities after a 14-year campaign.

Why PM Modi Visited the Netherlands Afsluitdijk Dam and Why India Is Studying the Dutch Water Model for Gujarat
- Narendra Modi visited the iconic Afsluitdijk in the Netherlands with Dutch PM Rob Jetten, studying one of the world’s most advanced flood-control and climate-resilient infrastructure systems.
- The 32-km Afsluitdijk dam protects low-lying Dutch regions from sea flooding while supporting freshwater storage, inland navigation, renewable energy and ecological conservation, making it a global model for integrated water management.
- India’s interest is closely linked to Kalpasar Project, Gujarat’s proposed ₹85,000 crore mega dam across the Gulf of Khambhat aimed at creating a massive freshwater reservoir for irrigation, drinking water, flood control and transport connectivity.
- The visit highlights India’s focus on climate-resilient infrastructure as rising sea levels, flooding, droughts and salinity intrusion increase pressure on coastal regions, while also drawing lessons from Dutch expertise in sustainable engineering and multi-purpose water systems.

Andhra Pradesh Offers ₹30,000 for Third Child, ₹40,000 for Fourth Under New Policy
- N. Chandrababu Naidu announced a new population incentive policy in Andhra Pradesh, proposing ₹30,000 for the third child and ₹40,000 for the fourth child to address declining birth rates and support demographic balance.
- The scheme, revealed during a public event in Srikakulam district, reflects concerns over falling fertility trends and a shift from earlier population control approaches toward encouraging larger families.
- The policy aligns with broader demographic concerns seen globally in countries like Japan, South Korea, Italy, and China, where low birth rates have led to workforce shortages, rising elderly populations and economic pressures.
- India’s replacement-level fertility benchmark of 2.1 children per woman highlights why Andhra Pradesh is focusing on incentives, as sustained decline could impact long-term economic productivity and social stability.

Sikkim to Implement Anand Marriage Act, 1909 from June 1, 2026
- The Sikkim government will implement the Anand Marriage Act, 1909 from 1 June 2026, allowing Sikh couples to legally register marriages conducted through the traditional Anand Karaj ceremony under a dedicated Sikh legal framework.
- The move became possible after the notification of the Sikkim Anand Marriage Registration Rules, 2026, ending the long-standing practice where many Sikh couples had to register marriages under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 due to lack of separate state rules.
- The implementation provides Sikh marriages with clearer legal recognition, easier documentation and stronger acknowledgment of Sikh religious and cultural traditions, including ceremonies conducted before the Guru Granth Sahib in Gurudwaras.
- The reform gained momentum after the Supreme Court of India highlighted administrative gaps in the Amanjot Singh Chadha vs Union of India case in September 2025 and urged states to establish proper registration systems for Anand Karaj marriages.

- India’s gems and jewellery exports fell by 9.07% in April 2026 to $2.23 billion (₹20,825 crore), mainly due to the West Asia conflict, which disrupted global trade routes, supply chains, insurance costs and international buyer sentiment.

World AIDS Vaccine Day 2026: Why the Global Search for an HIV Vaccine Still Matters
- World AIDS Vaccine Day 2026 is observed on 18 May to raise awareness about the urgent need for an effective HIV vaccine and to honour scientists, healthcare workers, researchers and volunteers fighting the global AIDS epidemic.
- Also known as HIV Vaccine Awareness Day, the observance began after a 1997 speech by Bill Clinton, who stressed that only a preventive vaccine could significantly reduce the threat posed by HIV/AIDS.
- Developing an HIV vaccine remains extremely challenging because the virus mutates rapidly, attacks the immune system directly and can hide within human cells, making long-term immunity difficult to achieve.
- Researchers are currently exploring advanced approaches such as mRNA technology, broadly neutralising antibodies (bNAbs), T-cell immunity and mosaic vaccines, while global estimates from World Health Organization indicate that nearly 40 million people continue to live with HIV worldwide.
