23 April: World Book and Copyright Day 2020

World Book and Copyright Day is being celbrated on 23 April 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, when schools, colleges, offices are shut globally and during this unlimited time, books can be the savior. Make your time spent more productive with the power of books and vast your horizons. Reading books will definitely stimulate minds and bring out the creativity in you which would be a bonus for you to enter the world after lockdown. Through reading books, we can celebrate World Book Day even during this quarantine.

When is World Book And Copyright day celebrated?

All over the world, every year 23rd April is celebrated as World Book and Copyright Day for paying tribute to all the authors, illustrators, their books and the copyright laws protecting their originality. This date is chosen as the symbol for the world literature by UNESCO as the auspicious birth/death anniversary of many famous and renowned writers of their times. The writers for whom this was an auspicious date to honors are Maurice Druon, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Manuel Mejía Vallejo, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla, Haldor Kiljan Laxness, and William Shakespeare. Originally on 23rd April 1995, it was declared by UNESCO’s General Conference which was held in Paris and after that, every year 23rd April has been declared as World Book Day or World Book & Copyright Day or International Day.   

World Book Capital for 2020: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Every year UNESCO and other international organisations representing the books publishing and books seller industries select a World Book Capital for a period of 1 year effective from 23 April and for 2020 its Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. As per the official UN website un.org “The city of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia was selected because of the strong focus on inclusive education, the development of a knowledge-based society and accessible reading for all parts of the city’s population.”

Why we celebrate this day?

The purpose of this day to pay tribute to all those writers and authors who have respectable contributed to the social and cultural progress of humanity. Another objective is to encourage the public to experience the pleasure of reading. On this day, we celebrate the importance of reading, children’s or elder one’s growth as readers, and value a lifelong love of literature into this beautiful world of work. World Book Day is a special day for all those people who are book lovers and do not need any reason to shower their love over the books.

How people celebrate this day?

Every year over millions of people in over 100 countries celebrate this day. Schools, colleges, public bodies, private businesses, professional groups celebrate this day in different ways. In schools of the UK and Ireland since the mid-1990s, the children are given book tokens and world book day resources pack to provide them with the opportunity to have their own books. The children of every age group are encouraged to explore the pleasure of books.    

With the support of writers, publishers, teachers, librarians, and the media, UNESCO helps to celebrate this auspicious day with the great reading public and by providing them resources such as downloadable posters. Some events are organized by professional groups along with other UNESCO initiatives with a particular theme. A few themes that were organized in the past are “Books and Translations”, “The Link Between Publishing and Human Rights”, “Evolution of Book Production, from Writing to Digital” and many more.
