23rd April Celebrated As World Book and Copyright Day

23rd April is celebrated worldwide as World Book Day. It is also known as World Book and Copyright Day, or International Day of the Book. It is organized by United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in order to support reading, publishing, and copyright. The concept was given first by Spanish writer Vicente Clavel Andrés who first suggested 7th October which was Miguel de Cervantes’ birth date to be celebrated as a way to honor him and after that suggested 23rd April which was the day Miguel de Cervantes died. Finally, on 23rd April 1995, UNESCO decided to celebrate the day as the World Book and Copyright Day. Coincidentally 23rd April is also a death anniversary of William Shakespeare (according to the Gregorian calendar) and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.
UNESCO and international organizations representing publishers, booksellers, and libraries for a period of one year selected the World Book Capital. Tbilisi in Georgia is selected as the World Book Capital for 2021. Books are a very important tool that will help in eradicating poverty, illiteracy and violence. It is very important that through this day we understand the importance of reading books in our life as well as millions of underprivileged children who have limited or no access to books. It thus becomes vital that we contribute in any way possible to help underprivileged children.
