What is SBI Circle Based Officer?

SBI Circle Based Officer (CBO) is an officer-level post offered by the State Bank of India for candidates who want to build a career in banking with a specific geographical circle. Unlike a regular SBI Probationary Officer, a CBO is recruited for a particular SBI Circle and is initially posted within that circle. SBI conducts a separate recruitment process for CBOs, making it an important opportunity for candidates who already have banking experience and want to join SBI as an officer.

What Does SBI Circle Based Officer Mean?

Circle Based Officer means an officer who is recruited for a specific SBI Circle rather than through a recruitment process where posting can initially be anywhere in India. The circle generally covers a particular state or group of states/UTs, and the recruitment notification specifies the state/UT and the local language associated with each circle.

The CBO role combines branch banking, customer relationship management, credit-related activities, business development and general banking responsibilities.

SBI CBO in Simple Words
Suppose a candidate applies for the Delhi Circle and is selected. The candidate’s initial posting will be within that circle rather than being allotted a completely unrelated circle at the time of recruitment.

What Does an SBI CBO Do?

The SBI CBO role is primarily related to general banking and branch-level officer responsibilities. The exact work can vary depending on the branch, location, business requirements and responsibilities assigned by SBI.

  • Managing day-to-day banking activities at the officer level.
  • Handling customer requirements and resolving service-related issues.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with customers.
  • Supporting deposit mobilisation and other banking business.
  • Working on loans and credit-related activities as assigned.
  • Monitoring accounts and banking transactions.
  • Supporting branch business development.
  • Ensuring compliance with banking rules and internal procedures.
  • Managing documentation and verification related to banking products.
  • Assisting in recovery and monitoring of advances, where applicable.
  • Handling operational and administrative responsibilities assigned by the branch.
  • Supporting the Branch Manager and other senior officers in achieving branch targets.

SBI CBO Job Profile

The job profile of an SBI CBO can broadly be understood through four major areas: branch operations, customer service, credit/business development and compliance.

1. Branch Banking Operations

A CBO can be involved in various branch-level banking activities and may be responsible for ensuring that assigned operations are completed accurately and according to SBI’s procedures.

This can include account-related work, transaction monitoring, documentation, verification and other operational activities.

2. Customer Relationship Management

Customer interaction is an important part of the role. A CBO may deal with individual customers, businesses and other banking clients for their banking requirements.

The officer may also be involved in explaining suitable banking products and resolving customer concerns.

3. Loans and Credit

Depending on the branch and responsibilities assigned, CBOs can work on credit-related activities such as processing loan proposals, verification of documents, monitoring accounts and following up on repayment and recovery.
This makes basic knowledge of credit appraisal, financial statements, banking products and loan processes useful for an SBI CBO.

4. Business Development

SBI officers are also expected to contribute towards the growth of the branch. A CBO may therefore work towards increasing deposits, loans, digital banking adoption and other banking business.

The role can involve interacting with existing customers as well as identifying potential customers.

5. Compliance and Risk Management

Banking officers have to work within RBI regulations, SBI’s internal policies and applicable banking laws. A CBO therefore needs to ensure that transactions, documentation and customer onboarding activities comply with the required procedures.
