TA & DA Full Form: Types & Meaning

TA & DA Full Form: TA and DA are abbreviations for Traveling Allowance and Dearness Allowance, respectively. The money paid to employees by the corporation is referred to as TA and DA. The dearness allowance is a portion of the worker’s base wage. The formulation and regulation of TA and DA are the responsibility of the Ministry of Finance’s Department of Expenditure. If any changes are required, the entire ministry must be involved.

What is TA?

The amount of money paid to employees for travel and other expenses on a business trip is referred to as TA. Typically, the cost of plane tickets, hotel bills, and dining expenses are all included. Some organizations pay fixed monthly travel expenses, while others require you to produce travel expenses, hotel prices, and other charges in order to receive the money you paid for the work trip. Travel allowances are fixed, so employees must spend within the limits; if they exceed the limits, they must bear the additional travel expenses.

What is DA?

The DA is a measure of inflation and salaries paid to government employees, PSEs (public sector employees), and retirees in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The Dearness Allowance is calculated as a percentage of an Indian individual’s basic income to minimize the impact of inflation on individuals. In a salary, DA is a living expense adjustment to the allowance calculated as a percentage of (Grade pay + Basic pay). The Dearness Allowance is adjusted for inflation in the consumer price index each quarter of the calendar year.

What are the different types of TA and DA?

There are various types of TA and DA available depending on the department and sector. In this section, we will primarily focus on Central Government employees.

The following are the types of TA provided to central government officers/officials:

  • Permanent TA: This type of TA is given when an employee’s sphere of duty requires extensive travel throughout the year. It cannot be given when a person is on leave, transferring, or joining.
  • Conveyance Allowance: This is an average monthly allowance given to employees for traveling by car or other means per month. The distance traveled per month is used to calculate the conveyance allowance.
  • Mileage Allowance: A specific distance traveled by car or any other mode of transportation at a specific time.

DA is classified into two types: Industrial Dearness Allowance and Variable Dearness Allowance.

  • Industrial Dearness Allowance: The Industrial Dearness Allowance (IDA) is paid to central government employees who work in the public sector. To help offset the impact of rising inflation, the contribution to the industrial auction for public sector employees is subject to a quarterly review based on the consumer price index.
  • Variable Dearness Allowance: Employees of the central government are entitled to a variable dearness allowance (VDA). To help offset the impact of rising inflation, it is reviewed every six months in accordance with the consumer price index. The VDA is built around three distinct components, which are detailed below.

How to calculate TA and DA?

DA is an important factor in calculating TA. The DA formula is given below:

The TA formula is entirely dependent on the area to which the person is traveling. For example, cities in the ‘A’ category, such as Delhi, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, and Bangalore, require more DA. The TA calculation formula is provided below.

There are various benefits of TA and DA for all segments of society. Some of them are as follows:

  • TA and DA help people with their daily living expenses, which relieves financial stress.
  • TA includes tickets, meals, and lodging, among other things, to motivate employees to perform better without losing interest.
  • DA is useful in old age after retirement, allowing employees to easily live out their retirement.
  • People are motivated to work in government sectors because of TA and DA incentives.
