World Science Day for Peace and Development 2022: History

The first World Conference on Science was held in 1999 and was organized by UNESCO and the International Council for Science. The gathering was held in Hungary, and several delegations concurred on the importance of educating the public about science. It was agreed upon by all that science should have a special day or week. The conference participants created an action plan to promote scientific literacy. This strategy was named Science Agenda — Framework for Action. The Executive Body of UNESCO approved Science Day for Peace and Development a year later. The first World Science Day for Peace and Development was observed worldwide in 2002. Under the guidance and support of UNESCO, various non-governmental organizations (NGOs), governmental organizations, research centers, and educational institutes including schools, colleges, and universities came together to celebrate this day.
