Every year the international family day is observed worldwide as we all know that family is the smallest unit of society.  It is not a public holiday. A happy and healthy family makes up for a supportive society, which in turn makes better citizens of the nation. The need to have strong familial bonds is what is necessary in today’s times for the growth of each member of the family.

International Family Day History

15th of May is selected to celebrate the International family day. The UN has initiated this commemoration along with the Universal Peace Federation. This initiative is backed by governments across the globe who celebrate this day with much enthusiasm with activities dedicated to the occasion.

When we look back to know how it all began, it doesn’t come as a surprise because the United Nations always has been at the forefront of working on the living standards and social progress of families across the world. Hence it decided a day dedicating a day for the families would be the right way to set about a paradigm shift in the way people could come together to bring about changes in the social structures otherwise governed by changing economic circumstances. The need for the changes to happen in a good way as families are the focal point of society paved the way for celebrating family day covering the entire world.

Why family day has become essential is what many would find perplexing, as technology has invaded our spaces the contact and family time is reduced due to work hours we need to bond as a family once again. The distance in relationships is causing an emotional upheaval in individuals who need to seek therapies as they have no one to talk to and approach. Studies have shown that tight-knit families have a better emotional quotient and a better perspective towards life than those who are from dysfunctional families.

International Family Day Significance

Psychologists have data relating to estranged children, or even spouses who will have an emotional disconnect at some levels compared to the ones who have been with their parents. There are special forums and sessions arranged to discuss the issues that are plaguing families. These discussions help to take up steps to check on families who are facing such issues and see if the family welfare and other helplines can help in coming up with solutions to set right such problems.

It is a chain reaction when families work towards building a strong bond. It echoes through the society as well to reinforce better societal shaping and in eventually, a stronger nation in the sense of a happier populace.

The International family day is celebrated with a different theme every year, and the changing themes are meant for the trending issue that is to be focussed on in the family. The developments are made when each government works towards the challenges that come to the fore.

Each year on this day, every country would hold discussions with the community leaders, policymakers, game-changers, influencers, and others along with the people to work on the shortcomings and arrange activities in which families can participate and take home the sense of bonding. The emphasis this time is about spending time with the family and making sure that more real contact than virtual interaction is made.
