International Firefighters’ Day 2022: International Firefighters Day is celebrated every year on the 4th of May. On this day we are invited to remember the firefighters who have died while serving our community or dedicated their lives to protecting the safety of all of us.  Sometimes that dedication is in the form of countless hours volunteered over many years, in others it is many selfless years working in the industry. Firefighters are one of the most fearless professionals who sacrifice their lives to serve people and property. The task of rescuing people from burning buildings and vehicles requires a special kind of training and the day celebrates the community’s courage. The symbol for Firefighters Day is a red and blue ribbon. The color red symbolizes fire and the blue represents water. These colors also signify emergency services around the world.

International Firefighters’ Day 2022 History

In 1999 first time firefighters day was celebrated when five firefighters died tragically during a wildfire at Linton in Victoria, Australia. They died due to the sudden change in the direction of the wind as the blaze caught them and they died tragically. It is on the 4th of May because this day is Saint Florian’s Day. Saint Florian, who was said to be one of the first firefighters of an actual Roman battalion and saved many lives, is the patron saint of firefighters. Sant Florian saved an entire burning village in Rome. He is the patron saint of chimney sweeps and firefighters. So International Firefighter’s Day is celebrated on 4th May as it is the feast day of Saint Florian.
