International Yoga Day 2022: International Yoga Day is observed all over the world on 21st June. International Yoga Day is celebrated to create awareness among the people about the benefits of Yoga and how it promotes our mental and social well-being. The origin of Yoga took place in India thousand of years ago. The word Yoga is originated from the Sanskrit word “Yuj” which means ‘to join’ or ‘to unite’. On 21st June 2022 the 8th Edition of International Yoga Day will be observed. In this article we have discussed in detail the history, significance and theme of International Yoga Day.

International Yoga Day 2022: History

 On 27th September 2014 at the United Nations General Assembly, the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi set up the idea of International Yoga Day. India’s Ambassador Ashok Kumar Mukherji submitted the resolution for the International Yoga Day. Out of the 193 UN member countries 177 of them supported the proposal. The UN accepted the idea given by PM Modi, framed it as a draft and gave the title “Day of Yoga“. PM Narendra Modi suggested the UN to celebrate 21st June as International Yoga Day. 21st June was chosen for International Yoga Day because summer solstice is marked on this particular date. The longest day of the year as well as the onset of summer falls on 21st June.

International Yoga Day 2022: Importance

International Yoga Day is celebrated to create awareness among the people to practice Yoga on a regular basis. Yoga is that form of exercise which connects our mind, body and soul. To remain free from stress one of the best method is to meditate. Yoga not only keeps our body healthy but also relaxed. Through Yoga our body and mind gets united. Many events are organized in schools and colleges on the International Yoga Day.

The first International Yoga Day  was celebrated with great enthusiasm on 21st June 2015. In New Delhi Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with 36,000 people, performed 21 asanas (yoga postures) for 35 minutes. Since then International Yoga Day has been celebrated all around the world. On the 8th International Yoga Day the main events will take place in Mysore, Karnataka.

International Yoga Day 2022: Theme

The theme for International Yoga Day 2022 is “Yoga for Humanity”. During the Mann Ki Batt held on 30th May 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the theme of International Yoga Day 2022. The Central Government has planned to organize special programs on the 8th International Yoga Day for the women, children, specially-abled and transgender population.

During the last few years people suffered a lot due to COVID-19 pandemic and also  from physical, emotional and mental stress. Practicing yoga on a daily basis proved to be a relief factor and kept the population healthy. PM Narendra Modi has asked his countrymen to be a part of International Yoga Day 2022 and practice Yoga with great zeal. The main focus of International Yoga Day 2022  will be the ‘Guardian Ring’. Guardian Ring will show the concept of ‘One Sun, One Earth and will make people understand the power of Yoga.
